Retired Whitten finding new career as track coach

As the Junction City High School track team begins the new season, athletes head to practice and see new faces as their coaches.

Of these coaches, one is not new to the area.

That's former football standout, Bobby Whitten.

Primarily coaching the shot put event, Whitten is outspoken about the change of the landscape of track and field.

''It's the same sport, but things are so much different,'' Whitten said. ''Back when I was in track, we just went in the circle and threw, now there are so many different kinds of drills.''

Whitten is focused on getting the best out his athletes,

''I'm hoping to get 40's out of all the guys, while (also) getting some 40's out of the girls,'' he said.

While attending high school in Junction City, Whitten competed in football and track all four years before graduating in 1977 with a full scholarship to the University of Kansas.

He then went on to excel at the University of Kansas as an offensive tackle for three years.

''I was focused on football, I had a full ride to KU'' Whitten said about his athletic career. ''Track was something I did to keep in shape.''

Whitten went undrafted after college but was given the opportunity to play for the Cincinnati Bengals for the 1981 season.

After his NFL career, Whitten joined the Junction City Police Department in 1988. He spent 23 years in the department before retiring in 2011. Whitten served as the Dare officer throughout his career.

Whitten has experience coaching. He coaches in the local youth football program, the Junior Jays, where he has been involved for over 10 years.

Another new face to the program is Whitten's fellow throwing coach, Chelsie Bonds.

Bonds originally is out of Wichita Southeast High School, and was a four-year thrower for the Buffaloes, lettering each year, before attending Kansas State University.

At K-State, Bonds threw the discus and hammer during the outdoor seasons along with competing in the weight throw during the indoor seasons.

During her competitive stint with the Wildcats, Bonds took home seven-first places, 10-second places, and 11-third place finishes, all in the hammer and weight throw events.

She lettered all four years with personal best throws of 180 feet-6 inches (2010 Nebraska Open) in the hammer throw and 62 feet-5 inches (2010 KSU Open) in the weight throw competition.

''I'm not ready to give up track,'' said Bonds jokingly about her urge to coach track.

She will primarily coach the discuss event at JCHS. The hammer throw is banned in every state but Rhode Island at the high school level.

''I'm hoping to get (senior) Charles (Moore) throwing 150-160 (feet) consistently, while getting rid of some of my guy's ballerina turns,'' Bonds said jokingly about her throwers. ''I'm hoping to get (the throwers) to peak around regionals.''

The Blue Jays are skipping their first track meet in order to allow their athletes two more weeks to practice their events, making the track teams first meet their annual home event on March 28 at Bob Schmoekel Track.
