Temps normal, moisture above average in February

In the first two months of 2013 we have seen something that we haven’t seen since 2005. The first two months of the year have both been above average rainfall. And on top of that, February had normal temperatures.

The average daily high in February was 45.1 which was only eight-tenths of a degree above normal. The average overnight low was 20.8 which was 1.1 degrees below normal. This gave us a monthly mean temperature of 32.9, which was a mere two-tenths of a degree below normal. By contrast, February last year was nearly 4 degrees above normal.

The highest temperature during the month was 68 degrees on the 17th. The coldest temperature in February was the morning low of 2 on the Feb. 1. We have now gone 24 months without an official low temperature below zero.

There were no temperature records set during February. The hottest February on record was in 1954 when we had a monthly mean temperature of 46.3. The coldest February on record was 1979 with a chilly monthly mean temperature of 17.6. February 1979 started the month with 10 consecutive nights with below zero readings, which actually started in late January so the region had two weeks straight of sub-zero overnight lows.

After last winter when we virtually had no snowfall, January and February have pretty well provided us with our annual seasonal snowfall. Two snowfall events provided 9 inches of snow for Junction City, with greatly varying amounts around the area. Average February snowfall is 4.7 inches. Season to date (October to present) we have had 18 inches of snowfall. Normal for that period is 14.1 inches. In fact, 18 inches is our average annual snowfall and we could still see more snow in March.

A rain event early in February followed by the snowfall events provided much needed precipitation for the region. Normal liquid precipitation for February is 1.12 inches. Milford Lake recorded 1.67 inches and Junction City recorded 1.63 inches. Year to date, Milford Lake has recorded 2.59 inches and Junction City 2.55 inches. Normal through the end of February is 1.77 inches. The last time that the area saw above normal precipitation in both January and February was in 2005. But it’s going to take more than that to make up for the 10-inch precipitation deficit we had in 2012.

March brings the official start of spring, this year it’s on March 20. The lengthening days bring rapidly warming temperatures. Average daily highs start the month at 49 and by the end of March we’re up to 61. Overnight lows

on March 1 should be around 25 and by the 31st we are up to 37 degrees. Gardeners need to be wary though as the average last frost date is April 15 and frosts can occur as late as May 10. March also brings changes in the weather patterns. While these spring storms can bring much needed rain, March also starts the severe thunderstorm season. Average March precipitation is 2.34 inches. But just because we can have thunderstorms and tornadoes, don’t rule out snowstorms just yet. Average March snowfall is 3 inches and those can occur to the end of the month.
