Seiser: Honoring someone special

I must admit I really don't know Honey Grant very well.

On just one occasion I have had the opportunity to speak at length with her about a project she was organizing through City Cycle Sales. Honey was organizing a toy collection drive for local children and families.

However, for about the past year, I have been able to observe her more than speak with her.

From what I have seen and now heard about her, she is fully deserving of the volunteer of the year award received Friday night during the Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce annual dinner.

Her pure joy for life and desire to help others is obvious without ever having to talk to her.

Often, Honey comes into the Chamber of Commerce office to attend meetings as a volunteer member — the smile she has when walking into the building and then each room is infectious.

It's virtually impossible to not feel good when she's near.

Her battle with cancer likely has impacted her in ways most of us who admire her from afar, will never know.

Two things are certain — her spirit doesn't ever seem to waver and she cares very much about this community. Because of her tie and love of this community, she does more and is involved in more than likely many of us even know.

Friday night wasn't her only recent award. Last year many of us observed as Honey and City Cycle Sales owner Wayne Jaecke received the business/citizen of the year award last year.

That award was well-deserved and her speech was heartfelt and full of emotion just as I would expect.

Junction City and this world sure would be a better place if there were more people like Honey Grant.

Not in Kansas anymore

OK, so we are still in Kansas ... just felt more like the great white north before, during and after Thursday's snowstorm.

Yesterday left many of us yesterday digging out of driveways and parking stalls after Mother Nature dumped about eight inches of snow on all of us.

Oh, yeah, thanks to that soldier for stopping his pickup on North Park Drive and helping me the final few feet out of the parking stall. That wasn't the only kindness I observed yesterday as people in general helped others dig out. Believe me, that doesn't happen everywhere.

But now things are relatively back to normal and the snow is starting to melt.

The city crews are out and trying to clear the streets and roadways and we soon will be in Kansas again.
