Katharine E. 'Betty' Moore

Katharine E. 'Betty' Moore, 96, of Clay Center, and formerly of Linn, died Friday, Feb. 15, 2013 at the Presbyterian Manor in Clay Center. Visitation will be Monday, 4 to 8 p.m., at Ward Funeral Home in Linn. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Visitation will also be Tuesday, 10 until 11 a.m., at the Clay Center United Methodist Church. A funeral service will begin at 11 a.m.

Burial will be in the Linn City Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Betty was born April 4, 1916, at Emporia to Clyde H. and Edna Smith Brown.

She graduated from high school in Emporia in 1932. She attended Kansas State University and graduated in 1940 with a bachelor of science in home economics. She was active in 4-H in Lyon County and was awarded trips to the American Youth Foundation Camp in Michigan, National 4-H Camp in Washington, D.C., and received the national leadership award at the 4-H Congress in Chicago in 1935.

While in college, she was a member of Clovia 4-H House. Following graduation from college she was a home supervisor for the Farm Security Administration in Washington and Republic counties. Later she taught home economics in Barnes and Linn high schools. She worked as a School Food Service Specialist with the Kansas Department of Education in northeast Kansas until her retirement in 1983.

She married John Richard “Dick” Moore Nov. 4, 1941 at Emporia. He preceded her in death in 2004.

From 1946 to 1964 she lived on a farm in the Throop Community in rural Washington County, moving to Linn in 1964. She moved to Presbyterian Manor in Clay Center in fall 2003.

She served on the Washington County Extension Council, helped organize the Triple L Extension unit, was a 4-H community and project leader and was in charge of 4-H home economics exhibits at the Washington County Fair. She served on the Linn Housing Authority board and was a long-time member of the Linn Booster Club. She was a member of Psi chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma.

She served on the Clovia 4-H House alumni board and was awarded the Who’s Who of Clovia Award in 2011. She was a member of the Washington United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women and was a certified lay speaker of the United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Janet and husband Norman Elliott, Morrowville, and Rev. Carol Moore Ramey, Junction City; two granddaughters, Lisa and husband Brad Diehl of Valley Center and Sarah and husband Roger Taylor of Wichita; three step-grandsons, Steve and wife Paula Ramey, Denver, Colo., Randy and wife Cyndy Ramey, Springfield, Mo., and Gary and wife Linda Ramey, Robinson; four great-grandchildren; 10 step great-grandchildren; 13 step-great-great grandchildren ; two sisters, Nadine Hopper of Emporia and Helen Kassens of Emporia.

She also was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Cecil Ramey and one step-great granddaughter.

A memorial fund has been established to Clavia 4H House or the Presbyterian Manor in Clay Center. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home, 115 W 2nd, Washington, KS 66968.
