January weather one for record books

In contrast to the last few days of the month, January started the new year in much the same manner as 2012, above average. But in contrast to much of 2012, precipitation was also above average, which isn’t really saying much as January is our driest month of the year.

The average daily high during January was 45.1 degrees, 5.6 degrees above normal. The average overnight low during the month was 19.3 which was 1 degree above normal. This gave us a monthly mean temperature of 32.2, 3.3 degrees above normal. The highest temperature for the month was a balmy 76 on the afternoon of the Jan. 28.

A few days later, overnight, on the Jan. 31 we had the lowest temperature for the month of 1 degree. This is not the biggest temperature swing we’ve ever experienced in one week however.

You have to go back to 1989 when we had a high of 73 on the afternoon of the Jan. 31, only to wake up the morning of Feb. 2 with a low of -10 degrees. We set or tied several high temperature marks in January.

The high of 76 on Jan. 28 broke the old record of 68 set in 1968. The high of 66 on Jan. 29 (essentially at 12:01 a.m.) broke the old record of 63 set in 2008.

The overnight low of 36 on the Jan. 10 broke the record high low temperature for that date. The old record was 34 set in 2007. The overnight lows of 37 on the Jan. 18 and 35 on the Jan. 28 tied the record high low temperatures for those dates. The old records were set in 1973 and 1968 respectively.

While temperatures were above normal they were a long ways from record warm however. The warmest January recorded was in 2006 with a monthly mean temperature of 43.9, more than 10 degrees warmer than this January.

The record cold January was in 1979 when we had a chilly monthly mean temperature of only 12.1 degrees.

January is our driest month of the year with an average liquid precipitation of 0.65 inches with much of that arriving in the form of snow. Average January snowfall is 4.7 inches. In a rather unusual occurrence, Milford Lake and Junction City received the same precipitation during January of 0.92 inches.

The area also received an above average 7.5 inches of measurable snowfall during the month. Season to date we have received 9.0 inches of snow, slightly below the average season to date snowfall of 9.4 inches.

January is our coldest month of the year with average temperatures bottoming out in the first half of the month and then starting to rise slowly in the second half, In February, as the days grow ever longer, we really start to feel the warm up.

Average daily highs during February start the month around 39 degrees and by the end of our shortest month, average daily highs are approaching 50.

Average overnight lows likewise rise from a chilly 17 at the start of the month to 26 degrees by the end of the month. Precipitation should show a noticeable increase in February. While long term average snowfall in February mirrors the 4.7 inches of January, total precipitation for the month nearly doubles January’s with 1.12 inches expected.
