Seiser: Now it's the voter's turn

Every local election cycle seems to bring its own surprises — some more than others.

I can't say I know what exactly would constitute a surprise headed into my first local election here in Junction City, but I do know from experience — the first step to a good local election is a slate of candidates.

We definitely have that for Junction City Commission and the USD 475 School Board.

It took right up until the deadline for people to step up to run for the commission, but those last several hours and days were bustling with activity of filers and there's going to be some new blood.

The only incumbent on the ballot will be Jim Sands. However, current commissioner Scott Johnson, who did not file for re-election, has suggested he may run a write-in campaign.

The situation leaves three open positions and the names of six candidates — Sands, Larry Powell, Mike Ryan, Mick McCallister, Lawrence Ruiz and Bob Henderson — on the ballot.

Voters choose three candidates. The top three vote-getters will be elected. The two with the most votes will serve 4-year terms, while the third-place finisher will serve two years.

The school district election activity started earlier.

There are seven candidates who have filed, including two incumbents, Kimberly Milleson and Carolyn Gaston. The other five running are LaDonna Junghans, Michelle Custer, Brian Field, Gerald Gerloff and James Kelly.

Some of those running for these elected positions recently have been critical of the school board and its financial decisions in public and on this page.

For those not interested in the status quo, both of these elections could truly be interesting.

However, history tells us voter turnout typically is pathetic for local elections. That's not just here in Junction City. When I was told a voter turnout for an election like this will be between 15 and 20 percent, that was no surprise.

That can compare to around 60 percent for national elections and sometimes national primaries.

Frustrating to me is the indifference for local elections. People make sure they get out and vote in the national elections but fail to realize local elected officials are the ones who make decisions that impact a community much more than the president or a congressman.

Your local city and school elected officials decide on the spending and budgets that directly impact your property tax bills. They decide what roads are fixed, how many teachers are in the district, what developments and building improvements are approved and have a say in just about everything that happens in the city or schools.

When voter turnout is low, a small group of people are making those decisions for everyone.

So now as these people have all stepped up to serve this community as candidates — and we all know it's not an easy job — the time is now for voters to get involved.

Take some time and learn about the candidates. As we move closer to the election, we will be providing plenty so you know what these candidates stand for and believe. To further bolster your knowledge, contact them via email or call them personally.

But the key will be April 2. How many of you will actually go to the polls?

For years, I have had the approach that if you don't vote, you can't complain about what happens. Sure, you can disagree with the results, but you had the opportunity to make a decision and voice your opinion with your vote.

So far I'm not surprised by who decided to run, not run, or that there are a number of candidates interested in serving.

Let's hope the surprise in this election for me will be much improved voter interest and turnout.
