Our view: Branding just one key objective

Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce CEO Tom Weigand returned this week from the Leaders' Retreat in Overland Park with a clear understanding of what the chamber's priorities should be in the coming weeks and months.

Those include increased cooperation with the neighboring communities of Manhattan and Wamego.

That expands the resources that can be offered to multiple employers and industries. Other issues include workforce development and improving transportation in the region. For example, the potential workforce coming out of both the local high schools and Fort Riley should be appraised to determine how well it aligns with the needs of potential employers.

While it is true that Junction City needs to be able to brand itself, just coming up with a catchy slogan is not necessarily going to attract new business.

That has been tried before, here and elsewhere. It is easy to come up with a slogan, slap it on billboards and other promotional literature.

Weigand is right that the meaningful, yet difficult, hard work is for the community to take an honest, objective look at what needs to be done to make our area attractive to future employers.

Weigand and other chamber elected officials understand their organization must take the lead in getting different groups of people together to, for example, establish regional economic development advisory and workforce development committees.

In doing so, the branding issue likely will take care of itself, based on what those groups learn about how people view our community.

We think that is the reasoned approach to take.

Not too late

This winter is shaping up to be one of the worst flu seasons in several years. While the virus is especially dangerous when contracted by the very young and the elderly, it can be debilitating to anyone.

Luckily, it is not too late to get a flu vaccine. Besides one's own doctor, vaccines are still available from locations including the Junction City-Geary County Health Department and Dillons Pharmacy. Head down to one of those places or any others today and improve your chances of staying flu-free this season.
