Seiser: A roadmap for the future

If you thought local stakeholders from Junction City were going to come back this afternoon from a Leaders' Retreat in Overland Park with all the answers to create a magical and financially successful future for the city, you may as well return to bed and continue dreaming.

But if you thought local leaders would find some common ground, focus and forge a solid start on a process and roadmap to guide the city's economic growth concepts toward future years, you would be right on track.

Just more than 40 Junction City and Geary County decision-makers, stakeholders and business leaders attended the retreat yesterday and through the morning today, which also involved Wamego and Manhattan leaders.

The intent for the retreat was to focus on economic development as well as community attitude and self-image, local government attitude toward growth, housing stock and recreation.

Following the morning session yesterday, which focused on Junction City, in general those who attended and participated appeared pleased with the progress and discussions that occurred.

Chamber leaders echoed that much information and some solid focus came out of the round table discussions and brainstorming efforts.

Although leaders will not want to admit this was just the start of a process, I'm going to tell you all that's exactly what it was.

Creating an economic plan, a branding and marketing concept and following through on those ideas is not a day-and-a-half project. This is something that can take at least months and, if it is done right, is the type of plan that can be used for years after that to determine the future growth and development of a municipality.

Concepts discussed included the need for more retail in certain areas, improved traffic corridors and industrial development as well as many more. Much of the talk was general, but some specifics were included in the brainstorming efforts.

It was apparent to me after yesterday's retreat discussions, Junction City leaders are on the road.

The car was shifted into drive yesterday morning and leaders just let off the break a little and are rolling — even if it is slowly.

Starting next week, we'll all find out whether the time spent 120 miles away was worth anything. Truly, Overland Park won't be where we look back and say the hard effort toward this long process was either started or completed.

The work should be seriously under way shortly. The Chamber and leadership must hop into the driver's seat now and lead the pack. Junction City has much to offer and we need to make sure anyone who visits or plans to move to the JC area knows every bit of why people love it here.

The most difficult part of this process likely will be branding and imaging. That is huge and was a topic barely touched Friday. I think it is really where the whole process must start.

We, as a community, must decide who we are, what we want to be and find those projects, developments and growth that fits within that brand. That's no easy task, for sure.

This effort also will require others beyond chamber members to be involved.

These are the challenges the chamber and this city must face as leaders drive the car down a road. We can't wait until next year's retreat to make excuses for why we still haven't picked a destination or maybe why we're even a bit lost. There's no place for excuses. Talk must lead to a desired destination, which must lead to action of what roads we are going to take to get there.
