Childs: Flu of 1918 has connection to Camp Funston

Once again that unwelcome scourge of winter, the influenza, is making news across our nation. Though the 2013 variety of the bug has hit hard in urban areas along the Atlantic coast and has spread somewhat randomly through southeastern and mid-western states, it is hard to know exactly what is happening in Kansas. One source says the Sunflower State has been hard hit, but local health care personnel report that in this area the infection has not been too widespread. Whatever the case, flu shots are being urged for everyone above infancy and frequent hand-washing or sanitizing is vital.

We are fortunate in this day and age to have the vaccines and preventative measures so readily available, for that has not always been the case. In fact, one of Geary County's least glamorous claims to fame in the world of history has to do with this wintertime malady. You see, it was here at Fort Riley's World War I training center, Camp Funston, in the spring of 1918 that the disastrous worldwide Spanish Flu epidemic first began.

Given this local connection and the ''starring role'' the disease played in last season's segments of the hit PBS television series ''Downton Abbey,'' we thought this would be a good time to review just how this happened, and how our community reacted to it. Thus, the Flu epidemic of 1918 will be the subject of our next two articles.

With all the movement of people across the country during this time of war, health care became very important. Many of the local doctors and dentists were called into service leaving a heavy load on those remaining. Dr. Samuel Crumbine of the Kansas State Board of Health set up rules for sanitation around the Army camp and made inspections of milk, and drinking and soda fountains essential. All city facilities had to be connected to proper sewers, and local doctor, J. A. Northrup, was appointed to be the first Geary County Health Officer.

Perhaps the greatest among the many unsung heroes of World War I were the gallant doctors and nurses who not only had to contend with the carnage inflicted by trench warfare, but also found themselves with the burden of nursing the entire nation through the terrible Spanish Influenza epidemic that swept the world in the closing months of the war.

It seemed the best and brightest among Geary County's medical community, were called into service. Among them young doctor Walter Carr and Junction City's popular ''Irish Doc,'' Fred O'Donnell. Though ''Doctor Fred'' had emigrated from Ireland as a youth he had never obtained U.S. citizenship, however when the chance came for the 47-year-old physician to serve his adopted homeland in uniform he never hesitated.

O'Donnell was assigned first to Camp Funston, then he was shipped overseas with the famed 89th Division. In France the 89th saw fierce fighting in the Battle of St. Mihiel where it was said he won the name ''the Fighting Doctor'' for his refusal to remain at headquarters when action was threatening. Veterans told how he established his dressing station in the front lines and worked continuously under fire to aid the wounded.

In the meantime, a large share of the Army's newly acquired Medical Corps was being trained at Fort Riley via the Medical Officers Training Camp. Here doctors and nurses were prepared to function in tent hospitals and field ambulances as well as in the big new base hospital (now the Garrison Headquarters building on Huebner Road), which had been constructed a year or so earlier on main post.

Nurses and reconstruction aides were toughened to meet the challenges of war through marching and daily drills. But the experience of trying to control disease and pestilence in a camp packed with 60,000 young men gave them real ''hands-on'' training. And in the end, when the flu was at its peak, they nursed both civilian and military with equal compassion.

The first recorded case of the Spanish Influenza occurred at Fort Riley in March of 1918, when a young mess cook, Albert Gitchell, reported to ''sick-call'' complaining of the symptoms — chills and fever and complaints of aching muscles and a sore throat. By week's end there were 522 such cases in the hospital at Fort Riley.

Despite the quickening effect of the fever, the vital signs — including the heartbeat — in these patients were slowed by what seemed to be a profound systemic depression. Doctors were puzzled. Also disturbing was the fact that the illness seemed to hit hardest among robust healthy people in their 20s and 30s, an age group where resistance is normally high.

This was the first of three waves of the ''flu'' which swept the country between the spring of 1918 and the early winter months of 1919, an epidemic that had such devastating consequences that we are just now realizing its overall impact. You see, back then the main concern of Americans was winning this war into which they had lately been thrust, and the whole focus of the country was on getting our boys ''over there,'' getting the job done, and getting them home again. Thus, the illness sweeping the land and the resultant deaths did not make the headlines and was not our main concern until after the business in Europe was over.

In spite of the fact that there were 46 deaths at Fort Riley during this initial onslaught of the flu, nobody seemed terribly worried. The 89th Division was about to embark for France and it was a time of excitement and apprehension. No one seemed too concerned about the possibilities of spreading this unknown malady worldwide. But that is exactly what happened. When the 89th Division and other U.S. troops landed in France in the summer of 1918 plenty of flu got off the boats with them. The disease spread through the trenches and among the civilians in France and England and then went south down into Spain where it killed eight million Spaniards and thus became known as the ''Spanish Flu'' or the ''Spanish Lady.'' Even the King of Spain was so ill with the malady that it was feared he, too, would parish.

It spread eastward into the ragged ranks of the Kaiser's army in Germany and swept on into Russia, China, Japan, down into South Africa and across to India where 12 million people died of it. The speed with which this ''Spanish Lady'' traveled was beyond belief.

It now appears that the Spanish Influenza was and is the same disease which has periodically swept the nations of the world during the cold bleak months of winter for centuries. However each strain could be — and probably was — a little different. The 1918 variety was described as resembling a ''very contagious kind of cold, accompanied by fever, pains in the head, eyes, ears, back or other parts of the body accompanied by a feeling of severe sickness.'' In most cases the symptoms disappeared after three or four days and the patient rapidly recovered. However, some victims developed congestion in the lungs, thought to be pneumonia or meningitis and other complications, and that is when the flu became dangerous.
