Survivor of Emporia church shooting a gun advocate

When Bev Hilbish heard about the murderous rampage that a gunman recently carried out in a school in Newtown, Conn., it brought back a flood of memories.

Of the worst day of her life.

The morning started out innocently enough, as Hilbish joined her family and her future husband, John, at Sunday services at Calvary Baptist Church in Emporia. But as they began to sing hymns, she watched a man with a duffel bag bolt through a side door and slam it shut loudly enough to get everyone’s attention.

That intruder, Cheun-Phon Ji, proceeded to use a 9 mm semi-automatic pistol to spray bullets at random victims in the church. And at that moment, Hilbish said, her life changed forever.

“Eight a.m., March 6, 1988. I can still remember the exact time it happened,” said Hilbish, 42, who was 18 at the time. “Unless a person has been in that situation, you can’t imagine what it’s like and the thoughts going through your mind.

“‘Am I going to make it through this? Why is this happening? Who is doing this? Are there more people involved? Are the kids safe?’

“It was just horror, true horror. Things like that, you just don’t expect it in a town like Emporia.”

After what seemed like an eternity, the gunman paused to put another clip in his weapon and the shooting stopped. Looking around, Hilbish saw more terror. Her father, Thomas DeWeese, lay bleeding from a fatal gunshot to his chest.

Hilbish felt a stinging in her arm. She looked down and found that she too had been shot. As the gunman fumbled to reload, a parishioner rushed toward him and hurled a hymnal at the man, who was now fleeing. That knocked him off-balance long enough that others were able to pounce on him and subdue him until police arrived.

Ji killed one and injured four others before he was led away in handcuffs. But police said he was bent on carrying out much more carnage. They said he had several other handguns, 300 rounds of ammunition and meat cleavers in his duffel bag.

The experience sent Hilbish into a bout with depression. And many wondered whether it would turn her into an anti-gun activist.

Quite the opposite. Though she had seldom shot firearms before that day of horror, she was brought up in a hunting atmosphere. She stated time and time again that guns weren’t the problem; it was the person handling them. “It wasn’t the gun,” she said. ‘It was a hate-filled person who chose to do such a horrible thing.”

By the time Ji received a life sentence for the murder of DeWeese and the attempted murder of six others, Hilbish had gone to work to make something good out of a tragedy.

Deeply religious, she leaned on God to get her through her time of need. “I used to have nightmares of a man standing over me with a gun, about to shoot me,” she said.

But instead of developing a fear of guns, she became more dedicated than ever to bringing up her children in a household where safe handling of firearms is of paramount importance.

When she married John, she got reinforcement. John was an active hunter, and she would tag along on trips.

When her daughter Megan was born, hunting became a family sport.

“I would carry her along with me in a backpack when I would go hunting,” John said. “She would just sit with me and observe, but she took to it right away.”

Megan remembers how she couldn’t wait to read so that she could take her hunter-education course and go turkey hunting.

Meanwhile, Mom and Dad became certified 4-H shooting-sport instructors and coached many youngsters on the proper way to handle firearms.

“Even when I see kids playing with toy guns and pointing at each other and pretending to shoot each other, I tell them how they should respect firearms and about the consequences if they did that with a real gun,” said Hilbish, who is now a Lyon County 4-H shooting-sport area coordinator.

These days, guns are very much a part of the Hilbishes’ life.

Megan, 17, has become an excellent hunter, having taken six deer, including a big doe during the Clint Bowyer Youth Deer Hunt this winter. More impressive, she has become a national-class target shooter.

She has qualified for national competition in 4-H, the NRA, the USA Shooting Junior Olympics and the Olympic Trials in everything from BB guns to air rifles to small-bore rifles. Megan, a high school senior, even fulfilled a longtime dream when she shot next to Olympic gold medalist Jamie Gray in the Olympic Trials.

Megan gets plenty of instruction from her parents, and they travel the country with her when she competes in tournaments. Now, Megan has her heart set on going to a university that has a good shooting team, as well as a good law program. Her immediate goal: to make the Olympic shooting team.

“I love to shoot,” she said. “We’ve set up a range down in our basement, and I will be down there for hours.

“It’s my dream to represent my country in the Olympics.”

Megan also has become an ambassador for the responsible use of firearms.

“All you hear about is the bad things that can happen with guns,” she said. “But we want to show people the good side.”

All of which ties back to that memorable day in 1988, when Bev Hilbish’s life changed so drastically.

“My dad wasn’t a big hunter,” she said. “But he wasn’t against guns.

“I think he would be very excited if he could see what Megan is doing.”
