Childs: Harry O'Donnell completes medical dynasty in JC

Editor's note: Today we conclude a four-part series of articles on the'' dynasty of doctors'' from the Irish O'Donnell family who lived and practice in this community for most of the 20th century. Though the first of these articles was written in 1990 and the last two 10 years later, we have been re-running them at this time in response to a request from an O'Donnell descendant seeking family history information.

Harry O'Donnell, the third of this ''medical dynasty'' to practice here, was 4 years old when his family moved to Junction City from Wilson in 1917. He remembers that this was an exciting time to be in Junction City. It was a beehive of activity with people coming and going all the time. Then in 1918 the flu epidemic struck and every doctor and nurse remaining in the state was pressed into treating the sick.

In addition to the flu, other diseases were also taking a toll during this severe winter and one of Harry's earliest memories of Junction City was lining up with his brother and sister in the kitchen of their house so his father could give them an injection. This was to protect them from the diphtheria, which had also reached epidemic proportions in the area. Harry recalls this shot was given in the backside ''with the biggest needle I'd ever seen!''

Harry states that he never wanted to be anything but a doctor. ''I never went through the fireman or policeman stage as other boys did. Of course I think I was kind of programmed in the doctor direction, though my dad was really kind of sly in his method of doing this. If he was going to a house call, he'd often take me with him and have me carry his medical bag up to the front porch. Then when I was in Boy Scouts, he always made sure I had a fully equipped first aid kit, telling me that since I was a doctor's son, they'd probably expect me to take care of them.''

According to Harry, ''Junction City was good town to grow up in. The schools were good, and people were friendly and interesting and accepting. We had a lot of friends in town and at Fort Riley too. In those days we used to go out to a lot of activities at the Post. I remember going out to watch Uncle Fred play polo and we'd go to Sunday afternoon horse shows in the ''Hippodrome'' area on main post. The kids from Fort Riley were among our closest high school friends.''

In spite of the fact that Harry's course had been set early in life, as a senior at Junction City High School in 1932 he proved he had aptitudes as a talented athlete and student leader. The 1932 JCHS yearbook lists Harry O'Donnell in the ''Blue Jay Hall of Fame'' for his accomplishments in track and dramatics and as president of the student council and Senior High S.E.A.

Following high school, Harry attended Kansas University at Lawrence. It was at KU that he met a pretty coed who was studying to become a medical technician. Margaret Large, the only daughter of farmers from Protection, Kan., had many classes with young Harry. They became engaged while still attending KU, with the understanding that they would marry when Harry had completed medical school.

However, instead of following the family tradition and pursuing his medical degree in Kansas City, Harry chose instead the Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia. He said that he has always been grateful for this opportunity to train in Philadelphia. He reasoned that though the old Bell Hospital at KU was a good one, it was just small — only 159 beds at most. However, at Temple he had four hospitals in which to work, with many hundreds of beds, and thus had experience with illnesses and conditions he would never have seen in Kansas, including a case of leprosy that had been taken off a vessel down at the shipyard.

During the summer just before his last year in medical school, Margaret came out to Atlantic City where Harry was to do his residency, to visit, and when the administration at the hospital found out that she was a licensed medical technician, they offered her a job. So their plans were speeded up some and Harry and Margaret were married in September of 1941.

Harry and Margaret returned to Junction City in 1943 where he set up a general practice in partnership with his father and uncle. At that time their offices were still on the second floor of the Thompson building. Dr. L.R. King, who'd had an office in the front of the building, had retired the year before so when Dr. Harry joined the O'Donnell firm, he took over Dr. King's old suite.

He only barely got his family — which by that time had grown to include daughter Margaret Shannon — settled however, before he left for a stint in the military. With World War II still raging, he served for the next two years as a naval doctor aboard the USS Sumner in the South Pacific.

In 1946 he again came back to Junction City to get down to the career he had set his sights on as a little boy. Harry recalls that this was a very rewarding period of his life. He and Margaret had added a son, Arthur Frederick, to their family while he was overseas and a year or so after his return their third and final child, Michael Sean, was born. He also had the ''wonderful opportunity'' to learn about the ''science'' and the ''art'' of medicine from his father and uncle.

''I wouldn't take anything for the experience I had with them. The value of having two older men around to tell your troubles to — to counsel with on a diagnosis was priceless. Both Dr. Fred and Dad had a wealth of experience that was invaluable and I felt it a great advantage to be able to have access to their wisdom.

''Of course it worked the other way too. I'd had quite a bit of training in immunology at KU and had some experience with new medicines — penicillin and antibiotics were just coming in — so I was able to show them some things too. I remember one case when I successfully treated a serious case of strep meningitis with massive doses of penicillin, which I'd sent back East for. In those days that diagnosis was like signing a death warrant. The next morning, after noting the patient's almost miraculous recovery, I went into the doctor's lounge at the hospital where a group of the older doctors were visiting. As this was the first documented case of the use of penicillin here, I ask how they handled such cases before these miracle drugs were available. One of them said that there wasn't much they could do except try to keep them comfortable with good nursing care and lots of aspirin. Then Dr. Fred piped up with, 'Gee whiz, I can remember when we didn't even have aspirin!'

''The most valuable thing I learned from my dad and uncle Fred was that the relationship with your patients is the most important aspect of being a doctor. You visit with them and talk with them and you always remember the ethics of the thing. You keep the patient's history confidential and don't go blabbing it around. The art of medicine is the mutual trust that develops between doctor and patient. Lots of pills won't cure people, but a lot of concerned, loving care will.''

When Dr. Harry O'Donnell retired in 1984, after 40 years of practice, it meant the end of an era. For more then 85 years there had been an O'Donnell doctor practicing in Junction City. He sadly remembers, ''I had so many patients tell me that they didn't know what they were going to do. You see, for as long as they could remember — and many of them were older then I — they'd had an O'Donnell take care of them. It was awfully hard to end a streak like that.''
