Childs: After long journey, O'Donnells set up practice in Junction City

Editor's note: Today's article continues the series of articles about Junction City's family of O'Donnell doctors who served this area for nearly all of the last century.

In a 1986 Geary Community Hospital anniversary tabloid, Dr. Harry O'Donnell reviewed the circumstances under which the O'Donnell family first came to Kansas. ''My grandfather, John O'Donnell, a country squire of sorts, and his wife Elizabeth, immigrated to the United States in 1884 from County Clare, Ireland, after a Union Pacific land agent sold them a bill of goods about Kansas. They had originally planned to immigrate to New Zealand, but were so impressed by what the land agent had to say about Kansas that they changed their plans and brought their 11 children to Genesco, a farming community near Ellsworth. They almost starved to death the first year, since they didn't know much about farming.''

Harry's father, Dr. Art, the second to the youngest of the O'Donnell children, was only 7 years old at the time his family sailed on a steam/sailing ship called ''Wyoming.'' Years later he recounted, ''My father and older brother had come a few months in advance to make arrangements for our new home and Mother with the remaining 10 of us followed a short time later. Each of the older children was assigned one of the younger ones to look after and make sure we all got safely on board the ship and down the gangplank safely when we arrived in New York. Mother was ill from sea sickness all the way across and we children swarmed all over the boat, getting in the way and helping the sailors haul on the ropes. There was some trouble with the steam boilers that caused the use of sails for two days, but we made the crossing in 11 days.''

The oldest O'Donnell son, Harry, for whom Junction City's Harry O'Donnell was named, had already earned a medical degree at Queen's College in Dublin. However, he determined to spend a year residency at Bellevue Hospital in New York before establishing a practice in Ellsworth. Later, three of the younger brothers, Fred, Alfred and Arthur would follow in his footsteps and all become doctors, earning their degrees from the Kansas City College of Medicine. Dr. Fred graduated in 1896 and that year both Alfred and Art started the course there. Both received their diplomas in 1900.

Fred, the first of the O'Donnell's to come to Junction City, opened his practice here in 1898 in partnership with Dr. L.R. King. Alfred returned to Ellsworth and went into practice with his brother Harry and young Art settled in Wilson where he practiced medicine for three and half years before returning to Kansas City for some additional training in surgery at St. Margaret's hospital. He returned to Wilson and practiced there until 1917 when he moved his family to Junction City to take over the care of Dr. Fred's patients while his older brother served in France during World War I.

Shortly after his return to Wilson, Art O'Donnell met the pretty young daughter of a Civil War veteran who had come to Kansas from Wayne County, Pennsylvania, after the war. Estella Bryant sang in the choir at the Presbyterian Church and as Harry tells it, ''The O'Donnell's were members of the Church of England, but as there was not an Episcopal church in Wilson and as my Dad wanted to meet Miss Bryant, he joined the Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir.'' This move brought results and Art and Stella were married on May 22, 1906. Three children blessed this union. Daughter Doris was the oldest followed by two sons, Harry and Arthur.

During the 15 years Dr. Art practiced in Wilson he had many experiences reminiscent of a frontier doctor. He liked to recount one occasion when he had to travel out in the country to deliver a baby during a heavy snowstorm using a livery stable team and driver. The storm was so bad and the drifts were so deep that the driver was forced to stop only three miles out from Wilson. Dr. O'Donnell then picked up his two medical bags and walked the remaining five miles through waist-high drifts to the farm home. He arrived just in time to deliver the baby, spent the night at the farm and the next day walked back to meet the livery stable driver. He had been gone for a day and a half and received the $10 standard fee for delivering a baby in those days.

But in spite of the hardships and challenging experiences, Art O'Donnell always remembered with pleasure his years of service to the people of the Wilson area. Many were Bohemian immigrants and the parents spoke little or no English. It was often necessary to take along an interpreter or use an older child to translate between himself and his patients. ''The Bohemians were frugal,'' he once recalled, ''they lived on a crust of bread, built their own homes out of native stone and soon had their farms paid for.''

Despite his appreciation for these Old World ways, Dr. Art did his part to bring progress to this rural area. For eight years he served as the mayor of Wilson and during this time saw electric lights and a culinary water system come to the little town. All the while looking after the medical and surgical needs of all in the town and surrounding countryside and maintaining a small three-room hospital of sorts in conjunction with his office.

It was while he was still living in Wilson that Dr. Art got involved in another venture that for a time became so demanding that it threatened to end his career as a physician. A friend interested the doctor in raising baby pigeons or ''squabs'' for eating. When the good doctor sent a pail of his dressed squabs to a friend in Kansas City he soon found himself in business in a big way. At the height of this venture, Art kept as many as 3,000 grown pigeons in a 28 by 100 foot barn, where each pair produced from 20 to 24 baby birds a year. In those days the squabs were dressed but not drawn, then were packed in pails of ice for delivery to the purchaser who paid 50 cents each for them. This was big business for little Wilson, but it all came to an end when Dr. Art decided to answer the call for help from his older brother.

Thus it was that the second O'Donnell doctor came to Junction City. Arriving in August of 1917, the family settled into a comfortable home at 426 W. Third St., where they lived until the mid 1930s. Dr. Harry recalls that he was about 4 years old at the time. Arthur was 18 months younger and big sister Doris was about 9.

Junction City welcomed this new O'Donnell doctor with open arms, for Dr. Fred's out-going, fun-loving nature had won him a big following both in town and at nearby Fort Riley and the ''fighting doc'' would be greatly missed. However, those who expected to find another Dr. Fred in his brother were in for a great surprise, for as Dr. Harry puts it, ''My Dad and Dr. Fred were complete opposites where their style of living and doing things were concerned. For example, my Dad was very punctual and kept to a precise schedule in his daily routine. He was hard working and always tried to keep hours that were convenient for his patients. He always made it a point to be on time. Dr. Fred was just the opposite; he was always late for everything.''

A typical day for Dr. Art O'Donnell always began early. In the summertime he'd rise at 5 a.m. and spend an hour or so working in his huge garden before he'd clean up and get his rounds made at the hospital. According to Harry, the one luxury Dr. Art enjoyed all his life was going to the barbershop to get his face shaved every day.

Harry recalls that whenever possible his dad would leave the office very promptly at noon and come home for lunch, or if he had Rotary Club he'd go there, then he take a 15-minute nap and be back at the office at 1 p.m. where he'd work until 5 p.m. He would leave at that time and go to the hospital to make his evening rounds and then be home for dinner and eat very promptly at 6. Then, because he was the physician for the Union Pacific Railroad, he would always go back to his office at 7 p.m. so he could see the railroad men who couldn't come up earlier. He would stay until about 9 and then go home.

When Dr. Fred returned from the war, the two brothers went into practice together in the offices above the Miller Drug Store. Here they kept watch over the health of their patients and the pulse of the town until 1951 when the steep stairs to that second floor suite finally dictated a move. By then both were well into their 70s and arthritis had taken its toll.

The fact that the brothers were so different may have been the very thing that made this partnership work so well. Harry, who worked closely with his father and uncle for the first 15 years of his career, credits the respect both men had for each other, as well as the strong family bond they shared for their smooth working relationship. ''Oh, there may have been times when each irritated the other, especially on the punctuality issue, but they never let it show. It was a wonderful experience to be able to work with and learn from them both. Though they were each totally different in personality and habit, they both were dedicated, compassionate, caring doctors who served this community to their very ends.''

Dr. Fred died in November of 1956 after suffering a stroke. He was 86 years old and had practiced medicine for more than 57 years. Dr. Art was 84 years old and had practiced medicine for 61 years when he retired. According to Harry, his father quit his practice only because he had gone blind in one eye from cataract surgery and he maintained that ''though he might have made some mistakes in his life that he didn't know about, he wasn't about to start now!'' Dr. Art O'Donnell died in 1971 at the age of 94 and if we could do such things, we'd dare to wager that he walked through those Pearly Gates right on time.
