Otte: Time to rework New Year resolutions

The end of one year, the start of a new year. The time to be thoughtful for a few minutes and make some resolutions of how you are going to be a better you, next year. But before I crank out some new resolutions, maybe I'd better check on how I did with my 2012 resolutions.

A year ago I resolved to: listen more, take more photographs, and slow down a bit and savor life more.

I don't know if I'm listening more, but I'm trying. I have a little sign taped to the bottom of my computer monitor that just says ''Listen!'' so I do have reminders to help me continue to work on that. Taking more photographs was not a problem. I'm doing it and will continue to do it.

Slowing down a bit and savoring life more turned out to be an interesting one. I'm trying to say ''no'' more often, but it's hard for me to do that. I had to slow down for a little while as I dealt with some heart issues, which also really made me appreciate each and every moment a lot more! So my last resolution of 2012 becomes my first resolution for 2013.

I resolve to try to slow down just a little bit and savor each and every moment. Many events in 2012 showed us all how fragile life can be. We never know what tomorrow, the next hour, even the next minute can bring so we need to treasure each and every moment. (This also ties in to my next resolution.) We tend to find so many things to do, and we try to do them all and then a day has gone by, or a week or a year and you don't feel like anything meaningful has happened because you've been rushing from one to another and not taking the time to relish and savor the moments. So slow down, savor, and relish all of the special little moments that are going to happen in 2013.

I resolve to be more forgiving, tolerant and willing to find resolution to issues. 2012 was a year filled with elections that became very bitter and down right venomous. We've got to put that behind us. Compromise seems to have become a bad word, yet it's how our Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights came to be. Life is not ''my way or the highway''. It's about finding that ground in the middle where we can meet. We have to remember that nobody else is quite like ''me''. Everyone has different views on everything. It doesn't make ''them'' wrong, they just have different views. We have to accept those differences, even if we don't agree with them, and move on. You see, the time we spend being angry and even hating takes away from the time that we can be savoring good moments.

I'm a member of Rotary International. There are many good organizations out there and through some twists of fate I wound up joining Rotary. One of Rotary's guiding principles is what's known as the four-way test, which are four simple questions. Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build good will and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? Four simple questions that hold a lot of power. Anyone can use these four questions to guide their daily lives, their business or their relationships. I feel that if we all asked these questions of everything that we think, say or do, the world would be a better place. So I resolve to try to apply the four way test everyday.

So there you go. Three simple resolutions. Feel free to share in them if you like. They are simple things that don't even make me go on a diet. But they are powerful things that can impact myself, the people around me and the world in which we live. Happy New Year everyone.
