Seiser: Predictions for 2013

Now that it appears as though we're safe from the end of the world and we'll see 2013, it's time for me to tell you all what I think will happen next year.

This is truly tradition for me even though this is new for all of you.

For years, I have put in print my predictions for local and bigger happenings in the upcoming year. Sometimes it's funny how wrong I am and other times I apparently channeled my inner Amazing Kreskin to be right on.

OK, so honestly, I'm usually wrong more often than I'm right. It's fine, I can take the heat.

Because I've only been here in Kansas for nine months, I'm not expecting much this time around. Hope you aren't either. Low expectations will make this much easier on me. So, here it goes.

Prediction No. 1 — Junction City will see some retail and business growth in 2013. Dick Edwards' new dealership is a work in progress and was a top story for 2012. But, we also know something's in the works for a development at the intersection of Washington and Chestnut and I believe we will know early in 2013 what to expect there. I also predict work will start on that development and we will see completed buildings at that location later in 2013.

While there will be new, it would be silly to say that there won't be some business losses. As a community, you always hope that more comes in than goes away. I predict a positive gain of new business and some very needed retail here in JC. The city is headed in the right direction and that will become more clear in 2013.

Prediction No. 2 — The much discussed ''fiscal cliff'' will drag the country into 2013. The national debt and deficit will become higher on the radar for most people as politicians in Washington continue their inability to work through possible long-term solutions. This will lead to further lack of faith in the future and consumer confidence will be low. The 2013 financial year in America will be stagnant with regard to GDP growth and employment.

Expect to see the reported unemployment rate probably drop a bit, but that is meaningless as there aren't enough jobs being added to keep up with new people joining the workforce and the numbers don't include others who have stopped looking for work.

Prediction No. 3 — Kansas Sate University, behind the efforts of Bill Snyder and Collin Klein will beat a more talented Oregon squad on Jan. 3 in the Fiesta Bowl.

Snyder will create a winning game plan and ''Robotron'' will not be stopped in a game that will be close throughout and be a thriller in the final minutes.

Oregon posts the 47th ranked defense in the nation and that means Klein and the Wildcats must take advantage in what will be a high scoring affair.

The Ducks average more than 50 points per game and face the Wildcat's 44th ranked defense that gave up 580 yards in the team's only loss against Baylor.

So you all know, I'm not off the hook on these predictions. One year from now, we will revisit my successes and/or failures. I will fully hold myself accountable for these predictions.
