Otte: My holiday wish for all of you

Does it seem like time is whizzing by a little faster all the time? Well, in many ways it is and we can all thank ourselves for that. It probably all goes back to whatever genius it was that invented the mechanical clock. Up until that time we judged time by the sun and the stars, the moon and the seasons. It was cyclical and what we didn't get done today we'd work on tomorrow. But the clock came along and all heck broke loose.

I recently read an article about time and the process of more and more precise timepieces and the work week and how it had changed time from being cyclical to being linear. We start scheduling this and that and more of this and more of that and everything we schedule just compresses that time line and speeds up the apparent passage of time.

I've spent time in western Africa and in Panama and in both of these places, time didn't have nearly as much importance as it does in our daily lives. Take a look at your own calendar and all you've got scheduled into it. How many times have you wanted to spend more time visiting with someone, but all you could fit in was a lunch. Sixty minutes tops and then you're feeling guilty because you have to be back to work or on to the next appointment. Aren't friends and family more important than the clock? A favorite phrase that was told me more than once in Senegal was that in America our lives are run by the clock, but in Africa they laugh at the clock.

Now I'm not going to say that schedules and being on time for appointments aren't important. They are a very critical function of our Euro-American culture. We are evaluated and judged by people often purely on our timeliness. But why do we schedule ourselves so tight that we can't take time to watch a sunset without feeling guilty? Is there anything wrong with sitting around with a cup of coffee and watching the snowfall outside the window? We need to remember that life isn't a race to see how quickly we can get through it, life is a journey that we need to enjoy.

So here's my challenge or perhaps my wish to everyone. Take at least one day a month and plan nothing. No meetings, no kid's activities, just whatever you want to do, or nothing at all. I have a saying up on my wall, ''You can't have it all, you can't do it all. Choices will have to be made.'' Maybe it's better to leave some things in life until tomorrow, or the next day or next year.

Try to find one day during the holiday when you aren't rushing somewhere. Tell your families that there will be one day when you won't be rushing from here to there and back again. Tell your friends that you can't get together with them that day because you're going to be busy doing nothing. That'll get you a funny look, I'll guarantee it.

Turn off the cell phone, the television and the radio for a day. Leave your watch on the night stand and let Mother Nature guide you. Get up when the sun comes up and then just follow the wind for a day until you wind up at home. A slower pace of life, even just one day out of the month, may be the best blood pressure medication, the best stress reliever, the best method to a longer life. And if you find that slowing down annoys you, maybe you need to re-examine your life and your priorities. I had an older friend when I was growing up that published a weekly newspaper. The masthead had a snail and a saying, ''Slower is better.'' I think old Norris had it right. So take it easy in the coming days and have a slow and relaxing holiday.
