Our view: Street talk, grants and growth all good

Junction City residents have a chance from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. today to talk about the condition of city streets to the folks who have direct knowledge of those issues. At an informational open house being held at City Hall, staff from the engineering and public works department will be available to discuss a number of issues regarding streets, including what plans for maintenance are in the works, what types of maintenance methods are used locally, and the specific programs in place.

A survey conducted last summer showed nearly two-thirds of respondents were unhappy with the quality of maintenance performed on city streets and that a similar number considered fixing streets should be one of the city's top priorities. So residents now have a chance to personally meet with city staff and find out exactly what is being done to address that issue and to offer feedback to the city.

We applaud city staff for its willingness to meet with the public and urge anyone interested to take advantage of this time to do so.

CASA deserves recognition, money

A group that doesn't get much publicity but serves a vital purpose — Court-Appointed Special Advocates — recently received an $18,365 grant that should help it boost its visibility and increase its volunteer base. CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to help abused and neglected children who find themselves in the court system.

They make sure that they are placed in a safe permanent home and don't get lost in the system.

In Geary County, the need is far greater than the number of volunteers now available. The hope is the grant money will help raise awareness of the need for volunteers so that the number of children served can be increased. Last year, 76 children were served out of as many as 500 who were in need of CASA volunteers, according to the executive director.

We are glad to see CASA get this new round of funding and encourage interested persons to consider volunteering. It is difficult and often heartbreaking work, but both the need, and the rewards, are great.

Chamber ready to team up

The Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce is considering a proposal to join in Team Kansas, a statewide economic development effort that is in partnership with the Kansas Department of Commerce. Membership comes at a rather hefty price of $10,000 a year for three years, which would be paid for out of the Economic Development Commission's budget.

The proposed benefits are still rather vague, but presumably include better access to consultants and higher visibility in economic development efforts put forth by the state.

It would appear to us that this is probably worth trying, especially since it will raise Junction City and Geary County's visibility. The chamber's CEO is in support of joining, and we agree as well.
