Seiser: Finding identity key to future

For years, I have covered local government meetings in several different communities. That has included city councils, village boards, school boards, town boards, plan commissions, you name it, I've spent many late nights often the only one in the audience watching and listening.

To most of you, sitting through these meetings sounds like the most boring thing you could possibly do. Sometimes, you wouldn't be wrong.

However you also wouldn't believe how much you can learn. There are times it is so interesting I wonder whether a career in urban planning or architecture would have been an equally good choice as journalism.

So on Thursday when members of the Chamber of Commerce Economic Development Commission advisory board turned their attention to the function of the group in Junction City, I was intrigued.

Talks revolved around how the EDC should help businesses and increase retail shopping options, bring in jobs and whether there should be a focus on increasing home ownership and population in the city. Those are all good questions and must be answered as much as possible.

However, I feel there is a key question about Junction City that must be answered first before moving forward to these other questions.

What does Junction City want to be known for?

Every municipality should be known for something and have an identity that attracts certain people and specific types of businesses and or industry.

Prior to moving here, I lived in a beautiful tourist city for 15 years. It was perched on the shore of one of the most amazingly clear and clean lakes anywhere. The historical downtown was filled with the tourist types of shops you would expect in a small town with that focus.

On the opposite spectrum, I grew up in a suburb basically known as a bedroom community with outstanding schools and safety for families. Most people commuted to their jobs as this community lacked any real industry or retail opportunities.

Those are pretty clear-cut identities and both have been consistent in their philosophies seemingly forever.

Here, a few miles down the road in Manhattan, the identity answer also is simple — that is a college town first and foremost. With that comes the facilities that cater to a majority of those who live there.

Unlike the three communities described above, it feels to me as though Junction City leaders and its residents can't respond with an obvious answer of a true identity.

This is a melting pot and extremely diverse area home to many Fort Riley soldiers, blue collar workers and military retirees. There are many different types of businesses, retail and some industry. People are very friendly and welcoming. The schools are of high quality and right down the road is the best lake in all of Kansas.

These are all positives in my mind.

However, Junction City doesn't have that one identifying quality to hang its hat on. The quality or identity that draws specific people and business here.

If I asked residents in Lake Geneva, Wis., or Manhattan what their communities are known for, I suspect the answers would come quickly and all be the same — tourism for Lake Geneva and Kansas State University for Manhattan.

For Junction City, I believe the answers would come slower and be more diverse.

That's exactly the reason this discussion must be had by leaders and citizens throughout Junction City. That can include longtime residents and those who are newer to the community.

Maybe the answer to this identity question still is to try to be a bit of everything to everyone. Instead, maybe it will be much more focused like the communities I described earlier.

Whatever the result, the identity answer should guide the efforts for economic development and growth in Junction City for years to come.

It's time to have this discussion as soon as possible.
