Otte: All I want for Christmas is ...

This time of year comes with a real peril. As much as I love the Christmas season, I hate that question of, ''what do you want for Christmas.'' Peace on earth good will towards humankind? Sounds good, but doesn't fly well when a family member really wants to get you a present. So if you are being pestered by someone for a wish list, or have someone you have to buy for that is notoriously difficult, let me give you a few ideas of things that someone who loves to garden or loves the outdoors might, or might not, appreciate.

If this person is a serious gardener, do not, I repeat do not try to buy them a garden tool. Gardeners are very particular about their lawn and garden tools. They may want a new garden spade, but they are going to want the hand forged (in England) high carbon steel shovel with a hardwood ash ''YD'' handle from a certified renewable tree farm (and I'm not making any of that up). So going to a local big box store and grabbing some shovel with a flimsy metal blade and fiberglass handle just isn't going to cut it. Get them a gift card and let them pick out their own darn shovel. If you want to know where to get the gift card, give me a call, I can direct you to who you need to contact.

Nifty little electronic gizmos sure look like a good idea but they are going to be frowned upon by the serious gardener. Then two years from now when you're cleaning out that junk drawer in the kitchen (we all have one, come on, you know it), you'll find that gift never taken out of the package. An electronic soil moisture tester? Seriously, real gardeners use their finger to check soil moisture. A long handled spider catcher so you neither have to bend over or touch the spider? That's what a shoe is for. If your response is, ''gee, that's kind of cool'', just walk on by as your gardener is not going to be amused.

While I'm not fond of electronic rain gauges, wind simply has an adverse effect on their accuracy, I do like the large plastic high capacity rain gauges and an electronic thermometer with high and low temperature memory. Of course, it has to rain before you need a rain gauge, but these rain gauges have an inner tube that measures accurately to 0.01 inches and after the first inch it overflows into a larger outer tube for up to 11 inches of rainfall (wouldn't that be nice!?) The beauty of the electronic thermometers is that you can put the sensor outdoors in an appropriate place (off the ground and out of the direct sun) and then read it indoors where it's nice and warm, or cool. With the memory, you know how cold it got last night regardless of when the coldest temperature was.

Books may sound like an antiquated idea, but many good field guides are available in ''real'' book form and now also as an app for that tablet computer. I have numerous field guides, for more than just birds by the way, on my tablet computer. The apps are usually every bit as complete as the paper version and often more so, for the same price or less. Likewise magazine subscriptions still come in paper version and often now also in an e-zine format that comes to your tablet computer, and then with you everywhere.

So gardeners can be kind of tricky and often the best approach is to just give them a gift card from a garden center or high end garden supply store. While you may think that it isn't very personal, it is often going to be the most practical option. We're getting down to crunch time for Christmas, but if you're still stuck, give me a call and we'll try to work some miracles for Christmas.
