Letter: School board not in control

To the Editor

At the recent 475 Board of Education Meeting the same old story played out.

For only the first or second time in the last two years a motion was made to delay until the next regular scheduled meeting of the Board of Education a proposal made by the school administration.

This proposal was to increase the graduation requirements for graduation from Junction City High School.

An argument was made by another member of the Board of Education that for the ''sake of time'' the proposal to change the requirements be voted upon and not postponed to a future meeting.

I would like someone to explain to me why time was of such an essence. The vote was on requirements that will first effect students that will enter the freshman class next school year. Requirements that these students will have to meet four years after that to graduate.

The motion to delay the decision for further study and possible rewording was voted down.

Then later at the same meeting the school administration made it clear to the ''Presenter'' of the proposed changes that to much time was being taken in answering questions from the School Board and that there was a need to move faster.

I learned in leadership classes that you could tell a lot about a work area if you take pictures at random times and than look at what each person was doing when the picture was taken. I was curious so during the ''Report of the Superintendent'' portion of the meeting I counted how many Board Members were doing what seven different times.

Of these times, two were during the discussion of the proposed changes. Both of these times I could tell that all the members of the board were fully engaged in the conversation. But during the other five times members of the board were playing with a big pencil that was a gift to each of them or they were reading things or scrolling on the computers or what not.

I wonder why the school administration wanted this discussion of the graduation requirements cut short. From where I sat this was the only subject brought up at a meeting in a long time that all the members of the board were really interested in.
