Hill: William Allen White awards still decided by schoolchildren

For 60 years, Kansas schoolchildren have voiced their opinions in determining the William Allen White Children's Book Award winners. Established by Ruth Garver Gagliardo in 1952, the William Allen White Children's Book Awards was the first statewide readers' choice book award in the United States and remains one of the few book awards decided by young readers.

Created in honor of Emporia newsman William Allen White, a two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Literature, the program is directed by Emporia State University with support from the Trusler Foundation. Prior to 2001, one title was given WAW Award distinction, but since then two books have been awarded annually — one for grades 3-5 and one for grades 6-8.

A selection committee nominates a list of books from which students choose the winners. For the 2012-13 school year, seven books are on the third-fifth grade list, with eight on the sixth-eighth grade list.

Voting for the awards takes place from mid-January through mid-April. A few days after the votes are tallied the winners are announced and then recognized in an awards ceremony that is held annually at Emporia State University on the first or second weekend of October.

This year's Master Lists include a variety of titles and genres from both well-established and new authors. A few take place in Kansas and/or are written by Kansas authors. All of the titles were published in 2010.

Grades 3 - 5 Master List

''Prairie Peter Pan: The Story of Mary White'' by Beverley Olson Buller. Using William Allen White's essay as a framework, this is the story of the brief life of White's daughter Mary, who died in a riding accident.

''Out of My Mind'' by Sharon Draper. Possessing a photographic memory in spite of an inability to walk or speak, Melody is mistaken as mentally challenged by those who cannot see beyond her cerebral palsy, impelling her to discover a way to communicate.

''Turtle in Paradise'' by Jennifer Holm. In 1935 Key West, Turtle adjusts to live with relatives she's never met and finds herself coming out of her shell.

''Guinea Dog'' by Patrick Jennings. Rufus is desperate for a dog, but his father simply will not allow it. When Mom brings home a guinea pig, Rufus is skeptical—until he discovers this guinea pig thinks he's a dog!

''Emily's Fortune'' by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. Orphaned Emily Wiggins and her turtle travel by stagecoach to live with an aunt, but a devious Uncle has other plans which Emily and fellow orphan Jackson must derail.

''Junkyard Wonders'' by Patricia Polacco. Through the work of a special teacher, Trisha and her special education class, known as the Junkyard, each child in class discovers their own unique talent.

''Star in the Forest'' by Laura Resau. Zitlally's father has been deported back to Mexico While attempting to return to the U.S., he is kidnapped. Zitlally discover a dog, and realizes the dog is her father's spirit animal, and he will be safe as long as the dog is safe.

Grades 6 - 8 Master List

''Strange Case of Origami Yoda'' by Tom Angleberger. Told through his classmate's interactions, unpopular student Dwight talks to his classmates through an origami Yoda finger puppet, who seems able to help each of them.

''Zora and Me'' by Victoria and T.R. Simon Bond. The early years of author Zora Neale Hurston and the growth of her love of stories are related by her best friend Carrie.

''Mockingbird'' by Kathryn Erskine. After the death of her older brother, Caitlin, an eleven-year-old girl with Asperber's, realizes that not everything is black and white. The world is full of colors - messy and beautiful.

''Tale Dark and Grimm'' by Adam Gidwitz. Hansel and Gretel walk out of their own story and into eight other classic fairy tales, encountering witches, warlocks, dragons, and other Grimm-inspired creatures.

''Ghost Dog Secrets'' by Peg Kehret. Sixth-graders Rusty and Andrew take in an abused dog and keep it in their hideout. But challenge's from Andrew's snoopy sister and the dog's abusive owner, along with the appearance of a ghost dog may lead them into an even deeper secret.

''Extraordinary Mark Twain'' by Barbara Kerley. Colorful biography of Mark Twain using excerpts from his own daughter Susy's biography of him

''Candy Bomber: The Story of the Berlin Airlift's Chocolate Pilot'' by Michael Tunnell. U.S. Air Force flier Gail Halverson led the initially unauthorized candy drop to children in West Berlin following World War II.

''Moon Over Manifest'' by Clare Vanderpool. Abilene Tucker rides a train to her father's hometown of Manifest, Kansas, where she learns secrets from her father's past and the town's.
