Seiser: A mentor for giving

The other night, I was flipping through the cable channels trying to locate something interesting to watch.

My search quickly landed on CNN, which was airing its live CNN Heroes show, a tribute to people around the world who give of themselves to help others and their communities.

I can't say I was really interested in the final 10 heroes or who the winner would be on this year's show. However seeing Anderson Cooper, the brightly lit stage and the excitement brought back memories of last year's event.

Exactly one year ago, one of my true heroes in this world was himself a CNN Heroes finalist.

So many people name celebrities they have never met as their heroes — people they have never talked to, spent time with and don't truly know at all.

But for me, Sal Dimiceli, a man I have personally known for many years through his work to help the children, poor and elderly in Lake Geneva, Wis., is my hero.

I knew of Sal and his organization, The Time is Now to Help, prior to becoming editor of the newspaper. However, I really came to know him during the seven years that followed. We often talked, and his weekly column in the newspaper — which continues to this day — reminds us all of the heartbreaking stories of those in the area struggling financially, physically and emotionally.

Sal not only uses much of his own money to help. But he also goes to the people's homes himself to help them in any way he can.

The day before Christmas last year, I went along with Sal for several hours, visiting a number of people. We went to dilapidated houses and a grungy hotel room that was home for a family of six.

I remember to this day sitting in one woman's kitchen as she talked about the financial and emotional struggles she was facing as the grandchildren she was taking care of for her sick daughter were on the floor playing.

That's when I realized why Sal often had tears in his eyes when he talked about his work. Those tears and pain were for the people he visited and helped every single day.

With the holidays right around the corner, I can't help think about how hard Sal is working to improve the lives of those less fortunate right now.

In the spirit of my friend and hero Sal — for his efforts to remind me to be more thoughtful and understanding of the struggles so many face on a daily basis and the beacon of light he is — I ask that all of us who are fortunate this season do at least one thing to help someone who may be struggling.

That could include donating items or money to the local food pantry, Open Door or many of the other local organizations that perform work to help those in need. It could mean ''adopting'' a local struggling family for which to purchase gifts and food for or volunteering your time with an organization or offering your services to a neighbor in need.

Through this giving, we can all help make this community better.

Sal is miles away helping those in need somewhere else. This is really the only way to repay him for helping so many of us become better, more giving people.

I know he would be proud and call us heroes, too.
