Moyer: Library's Christmas activities set for public

The halls are decked, the lights are on the tree, and the bells are jingling. The Dorothy Bramlage Public Library has officially kicked off the holiday season and invites patrons to drop by and do the same with one or all of the library's holiday activities.

The first order of business is to upload the spirit of the season. Families will have the opportunity to do so this morning at 10 with Christmas Stories and Snacks. Here kids can enjoy a collection of holiday stories, new and old, partake of seasonal treats, and take a meeting with jolly old St. Nick himself. This Saturday at the Library event will be held in the library meeting room. No pre-registration is required and all families are invited to attend.

Families with 8 to 17-year-olds will also want to register their kids for Holiday Sharpie Art. This after-school program will give attendees the opportunity to create a variety of winter and holiday themed sharpie gifts and ornaments. It will be held on Dec. 20 at 4 p.m. for those who register by Dec. 18 or before. the maximum enrollment of 18 is reached. All materials will be provided and no fees will be charged.

While here, parents and kids can also check out the holiday collection that is located near the entrance to the Young People's Section. It includes everything from seasonal tales to hands-on, how-to books for holiday foods and decorations so patrons can learn how to make their holidays tasty as well as festive.

The collection includes the children's titles ''The Christmas Tugboat: How the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Came to New York City'' by George Matteson and Adele Ursone and ''When Santa Fell to Earth'' by Cornelia Funke. Also here is ''Debbie Macomber's Christmas Cook Book'' and William Sonoma's ''Christmas Entertaining.''

A bevy of holiday movies are also included in the display for those families that need a little inspiration while stringing their popcorn and cranberries. This can include that perennial favorite, ''A Charlie Brown Christmas,'' or perhaps the ''Miracle on 34th Street'' or even ''The Muppet Christmas Carol.''

Those shopping for the book and library lovers in their lives can also take a moment to pick up some Friends of the Library gift certificates. The recipients will be able to use them to purchase all FOL-sponsored items in any combination including memberships in the organization, Geary County Landmark Keepsakes and book, audio and video titles from the various book sales that are held throughout the year. The certificates can be purchased in any amount and will have no expiration date.

Those who want to give the gift of warmth this season are also welcome to make a donation to the Cap and Mitten Tree. This symbol of the holiday spirit has become a library tradition and beckons all to decorate it with new homemade or purchased winter hats, gloves, mittens, scarves and socks for grade school-aged children. These will be collected through the end of the year and distributed to local elementary schools to ensure that their students make it to and from school with warm ears, fingers and toes.

In recognition of the holidays and to warm the hearts of the staff, the library will be closed on Dec. 24-26 as well as Dec. 31 and Jan. 1. The outdoor book drop will be open so items can still be returned throughout the closing period. Staff will be checking the drop periodically so it does not runneth over with the bounty of the season.

Start your holiday countdown with a trip to the public library. It's a great way to spark the spirit and it starts today with a morning of Christmas cheer.
