Childs: Some unique election bets have been paid in Geary County

The 2012 lengthy hard-fought presidential election is now over and depending upon one's politics we may now be experiencing a period of mourning or one of jubilation. The passion with which this campaign has been conducted was undoubtedly intended to get citizens out to the polls across the nation and bring about a change in the political impasse that has crippled our nation for many months.

Yet as things turned out, it appears that nothing has changed at all. In weeks ahead as editors and commentators dissect and analyze the impact this lack of change will bring, most of us just want to be done with it. And those of us, who are heading down the other side of the hill, after having climbed to the summit, find ourselves wishing heartily for a return to normalcy and civility much faster than it may come.

We are ready to move on to the winter holidays and lighter, happier times and forget what could be described by some as ''this bad joke.'' Thus, as the search began for column material to fit this criterion this week, this writer came across a century-old election story that needs to be shared. Perhaps it will give us some perspective on the political age in which we now live and remind us not to take ourselves, or our politics, too seriously.

The first notation appeared in the Junction City Union of Nov. 4, 1908, the day after the national election that saw William Howard Taft elected to succeed the popular Teddy Roosevelt as president of the United States.

''How times have changed in the past few years, and as one of Junction's old residents stated last night while waiting for the election returns, 'Just think, here we are trying to celebrate a Republican national victory and the best we can do nowadays is to blow a horn and ring a bell. How long has it been since the election night when Capt. Henderson was so sure that things were right that he hauled in several cords of wood from his farm and there in the center of the street at the corner of 7th and Washington lighted a big bonfire. In those days the election was a grand affair!'''

''Patriotism was displayed back then and a more loyal set of men would be hard to find than the men who celebrated in those days on the streets of this little city. Now it is all changed and the people go home early and once in awhile some patriot blows a horn or rings a bell and greatly shocks the rest of us.''

However, it appears that there were yet a few ''live wires'' in Junction City in 1908 who took elections seriously, or perhaps we should say ''election fun'' seriously.

On Nov. 6, the Union carried the following announcement. ''On Saturday evening at 8 o'clock, Charles Clewell, head drug clerk of Baskin Drug Store (now the Pottberg, Gassman, Hoffman building) on North Washington, will pay a unique election bet by marching up Washington from 9th to 6th Street playing ''A Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight'' on his horn.

''Before the election Mr. Clewell and Mr. H.O. Otnes wagered on their respective candidates and Mr. Otnes won. Had Otnes lost, he would have been compelled to march the same distance playing ''Love Me and the World Is Mine'' on the bass drum. Mr. Clewell says he would be glad to head a procession of men who have bets of this manner to pay on Saturday night.''

Did he do it? Indeed, he did, and the Union of Nov. 9, 1908, recorded every detail.

''The paying of election bets is about completed. Among the last of the ridiculous bets to be paid was the performance of Mr. Clewell on Washington Street last Saturday evening. He had wagered, as was told in last Friday's issue of the Union, that if Taft was elected he would march from 9th to 6th Street and back again on Washington Street, playing ''A Hot Time'' on his cornet.

''Well, he lost, and had to pay his bet. He was game all right, and last Saturday evening he marched down the street while the big crowds of Saturday shoppers cheered him, playing as he had agreed.

''However, there was a feature to the bet that had not been planned for, and that was the presence of the Salvation Army.

''The captain had gathered a crowd for a street meeting and was preaching when Clewell came down the street. Of course the playing and the general racket interfered with his work, and with great cleverness, he started singing the Salvation Army words which are set to the tune of ''Hot Time.''

''Not only that, but he went out into the middle of the street, and taking Clewell by the arm, led him into the circle. Clewell assisted them through two verses of the song on his bass horn. Then he turned around and marched back.

''Of course there was the accompaniment of many small boys. And 'friends' of Mr. Clewell made his march lively by setting off fireworks of various sorts and assisting generally in making the march attract attention.''

This post election merriment wasn't confined to Junction City, as noted in the Union's final 1908 election report.

''A great many of the soldiers at Fort Riley have been paying their election bets, and there are many queer sights seen on post these days as a consequence. Saturday afternoon two soldiers who lost a bet hauled the winner about the post in a wheelbarrow, one man pulling and the other pushing. It took this party several hours to traverse the required distance.''

Yes, it appears that some things never change. Today, elections still make fools of men—and women, but somewhere along the way we seem to have lost the fun. And that is, indeed, too bad.
