Our view: Baseball back in JC a good thing

Junction City commissioner Cecil Aska is among a number of local folks working to bring a collegiate summer baseball team back to Junction City and Rathert Stadium in time for the 2013 season. We hope he is successful in his efforts. We fondly recall the five seasons the Junction City Generals were in town.

The games provided our town with another venue of family entertainment, not to mention some decent baseball at a reasonable ticket price.

The collegiate summer league that the Generals belonged to allow college athletes to hone their skills after the college baseball season ends in the spring. The athletes are unpaid so as not to violate NCAA rules and stay with host families during the summer.

The final season for the Generals was 2010, when sales dropped by 25 percent, according to the team's owner, who attributes the drop to a struggling economy and the deployment of large numbers of troops. Maintenance at the stadium and field conditions were also issues at the time.

This time around, the economy is on the rebound, many of the troops are back at Fort Riley and, as Aska points out, field and stadium conditions are much improved. He is working to put together business support in the form of sign sponsorships that could help as well in financially in attracting and keeping a team here.

It is too early to predict if Aska and those working to field a collegiate summer team will be successful, if the team will again be called the Generals, and who might be involved in its ownership. But if they pull it off, count us among those who would be delighted to spend some summer evenings at Rathert Stadium, eating peanuts or a hot dog and watching baseball once again.

Adoptions in Kansas

One of Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback's programs with which few can find fault is his emphasis on increasing the number of state-sponsored adoptions in Kansas. We certainly support it. While the number of children adopted has only risen slightly since he took office, the state under Brownback has put increased emphasis on the importance of placing children into homes.

In Kansas, adoptions processed through the state cost hardly anything. Children over the age of 16 receive free tuition to any public college or university. That is important, since those are the hardest children to adopt. The state allows single parents and gay couples to adopt as well.

We commend Brownback, who with his wife have adopted two children, for his emphasis on trying to get children out of state custody and into homes.
