Simpler times: Former coach made lasting impact on community

If we are fortunate in this life we meet one or maybe a few people who inspire and encourage us to a full and well-lived life. Many people might know that Alvie Dee Simpler coached football and track for Junction City High School from May 1958 until 1981. His former players may know that he was a very inspirational coach. Friends will know that he continued to support Junction City High School and all its teams and programs even after his retirement. I would like to share his life story. He was definitely a person one would want to meet and know.

Alvie Dee Simpler was born on a ranch near Strong City, in Roger Mills County, Okla., on July 4, 1921. His father Jasper E. Simpler was a rancher and his mother Lulu V. Ratheel Simpler, kept house. Alvie was the youngest of eight children. He attended high school in Stroud, Okla., where he was the first to letter all four years in both football and basketball. He played trumpet in the school band and in dance bands. He had roles in school plays and musicals.

On Dec. 7, 1941, he had been planning to go to university, but instead he applied to the Air Cadet Corp and was sent to Oklahoma City for his physical. He was inducted into the service Jan. 21, 1942. After basic training at Fort Sill, Mr. Simpler was a clerk for the 348th Air Service Squadron, a unit which did everything necessary to keep B-24 bombers flying. As his unit trained B-24s were brought from the factories for the soldiers to learn to maintain them. He was next sent to New York where he boarded the Louis Pasteur in the company of 6,000 troops headed into action in World War II.

The Pasteur was a French-built turbine steam ship which was taken over by the British after France fell and put into service as a troop transport. One of the units it moved was the British 8th Army. Alvie Simpler was attached to the British Eighth Army and the United States Air Support Group which defeated Rommel in East Africa. He also served in Italy.

Simpler became interested in organizing touch football and basketball teams and religious services for his unit. These were the activities which filled the 12 to 18 hour stretches when the bombers his unit serviced were flying their missions. In a 'Veterans on Parade' interview at the Geary County Historical Museum in 2005, Mr. Simpler said that this was what led him to coaching. His family further clarified that as a young man he felt he must choose between Christian Ministry and a career teaching and coaching. In the end he chose teaching and coaching the sports he loved as a venue where he could influence greater numbers of young people in a positive direction, and share his faith.

When VE day occurred Staff Sergeant Simpler was already back in the states. He married Helen Prather, his childhood sweetheart, on Oct. 21, 1944, in Sedan, Kan. He was honorably discharged from the service at Fort Douglas, Utah, on Oct. 26, 1945.

In January of 1946 Alvie enrolled at Oklahoma State to study physical education, industrial arts and psychology via the GI Bill. While at he was there, some 4,000 veterans came to study. The university quickly built a Veterans Village to accommodate them. However it was poorly built and heated with kerosene. The buildings were very cold in winter and about every third day they would lose electricity. He earned a bachelor's degree in secondary education in January of 1949 and a master's degree in secondary education in August of 1950.

While still finishing his master's degree he began teaching and coaching in Okeene, Okla. He moved his young family to Hominy, Okla., in 1951. There he taught industrial arts and physical education and coached football from 1951 to 1958. The Simpler family, Al and Helen and their children Alvie Dee Jr., Janet Kay and Susan Dawn, came to Junction City May 31, 1958, just in time to see the new high school being built.

Coach Simpler's football teams at Junction City High School were Central Kansas League Champs in 1964, 1967 and 1968. They were also rated No. 1 in State Quad A football by the members of the press in 1968.

When the state playoffs began in 1969, teams played for the Central Kansas League Championship, the District Championship, the Regional Championship and the State Quad A Championship in that order, playing until they were eliminated. Therefore, a championship at the Regional level, for example, means that one is also district and league champion by definition.

Coach Simpler's Junction City teams were Central Kansas League champs in 1970, 1974, and 1977. They were District champions in 1971, 1972, and 1975. They were second in the state in Quad A football in 1973 and 1976. They won the state Quad A Football Championship in 1969. Junction City High School football teams coached by Alvie Simpler won a total of 142 games, lost 74 and tied 3 times.

Coach Simpler had impressive track teams as well. With league, regional and state meets to compete in, Junction City High School track teams were Central Kansas League champs in 1964, 1965 and 1975; regional champs in 1970; they were third in the state in 1972 and 1976; second in the state in 1978; and state champs in 1969, 1971, and 1973. After the team's affiliation switched to the I-70 League in 1979 Coach Simpler's teams were second in the state in 1979 and regional champs in 1980. Additionally, the indoor track team was third in the state in 1971 and 1978; second in the state in 1969 and 1973. The girls track team was third in the state in 1978.

These are impressive records, sustained over a period of 23 years. Coaching is a profession where success often tends to be determined by the ratio between wins and losses, and coaches can be thought of as only as good as their last winning season. But to emphasize only Ws and Ls would leave out another very important affiliation in Coach Simpler's life. That was the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, founded in 1954 by John McClendon, and discovered in Junction City by Coach Simpler when he came here in 1958. The local Huddle group met in the Simpler family's basement on Thursday evenings. When Coach Simpler suggested that the Huddle group meeting should rotate through local churches as Huddle groups in other communities did, the athletes would ask to return to Coach Simpler's home where they were more comfortable. Coach Al Simpler's son Dee, who coached with him toward the end of his career, said that athletes discussed issues they faced each day. They discussed scripture and its daily relevance. They prayed together. They attended regional F.C.A. conferences at Rock Springs Ranch and national conferences at Estes Park, Colo., but the ''heart and soul'' of F.C.A. in Junction City was the local Huddle group.

Coach Simpler retired from coaching in 1981, and as athletic director of Junction City High School in 1983. During his tenure the students of Junction City High School had presented tokens of affection for their coach on Al Simpler Day. He was nominated to the Kansas State High School Activities Hall of Fame by Robert Clowe, and was inducted on May 28, 1988.

Even after his remarkable career Al Simpler continued to give service. The Geary County Historical Society has its own special remembrance. In our Gallery I stand a 1908 Concord spring top buggy and a single horse cutter (sleigh) which were brought to the museum literally in pieces. These vehicles were reassembled and restored to their present condition by Al Simpler in 1986 and continue to demonstrate to museum visitors the transportation of the early 1900s. In 1992, he refurbished a railroad bench, which sits in our depot exhibit on the second floor of the Museum. He also refinished several desks in our one-room school classroom. These contributions of skill and time are very much appreciated.

When Coach Al Simpler passed on Oct. 24, 2007, he was remembered by his family with the motto ''No alibis, no regrets.'' Would that we could all claim such a motto for our lives.
