Lady Jays vie for volleyball state title

By Jim Potts

sports.beat@thedailyunion.net

The Junction City Lady Jays volleyball team has a tough road ahead on its journey to a state title.

The Lady Jays will face three tough teams in pool play and must earn at least two wins against the defending state champion Washburn Rural Lady Junior Blues (36-3), the Gardner-Edgerton Lady Trailblazers (34-6) and the Blue Valley North Lady Mustangs (30-8) in order to advance to Saturday's tournament.

''We watched Washburn and Gardner-Edgerton, yesterday,'' Jays' coach Megan Parks said. ''We've played Washburn before so we know what they do with their defense and who their top players are. We've also played Gardner. We played both teams pretty close. The second game against Washburn was not as close, but we know their tendencies.''

The Lady Jays open pool play with an early morning match up against Washburn Rural, who beat the Jays 25-15 and 25-18 Sept. 11. Washburn Rural cruised to victory during the sub-state tournament at Junction City last week without losing a single set while playing Shawnee Heights and Southeast Wichita.

''They have a winning tradition and a good coach in Kevin Bordewick,'' Parks said. ''These girls have jump training, their offseason workout plan is very good and they play on elite club teams. Volleyball has been bred into them and the expectations they have are so much higher than others.''

After Washburn, the Jays face Gardner-Edgerton — one of only three teams to defeat Washburn Rural. The Lady Trailblazers beat the Jays in two sets (25-20, 25-17) in their only game of the season at the Manhattan Invitational Oct. 6.

The Jays then wrap up the day with a game against the Lady Mustangs, who the Jays have not played this season.

''We prepare the exact same as we would any other game,'' Parks said. ''We still condition, we have the same talks and I still yell. The practices are the same. We just gear it with a higher intensity.''

Last weekend, Jays qualified for state after beating their rival, the Manhattan Lady Indians, for only the second time in school history, then trounced the Topeka Lady Trojans in the final round in two sets.

''We are nervous, but excited with anticipation of what could happen,'' senior Erika Goodwin said. ''I am all jittery. I can't focus on class and I forget to say hi to people because I am so happy. I'm in my own zone.''

While preparing for Friday, some girls on the Jays' roster have started to feel the pressure of facing Kansas' elite volleyball teams.

''I am getting a lot more nervous,'' senior Jordan Hatch said. ''It's nerve racking. Before, I was excited and just said 'Let's go', but now it's getting to that point and it is a lot more intense. I am definitely ready.''

While Hatch feels nervous about this weekend, other players have a hard time waiting to prove they are the best team in Kansas

''I'm not nervous. I'm pumped,'' senior Peyton Pender said. ''I know we can play with the best of them. When it comes to our competition, we play up to their level. The better the competition, the better we play.''

The Jays roster features seven seniors and for many Friday and Saturday may be the last time they ever take to the courts as volleyball players. While some look at it as a bittersweet moment, others see it as a sad time because it will likely be the end of their volleyball career.

''It's bittersweet. It's sad to know it's our last game, but it's very exciting,'' Daijana Wallace said. ''We actually made it to state and it's been an experience. I did not play with them when I was younger, but I got up to their level and to be here with them is an amazing thing. I would like to play volleyball in college, but I am not sure where yet. Wherever life takes me, I am willing to go.''

While many on the team have spent years playing together, Italian exchange student Iri Mariotti said she has had a great experience with the Jays.

''It was my first season with this team, but I feel really, really proud to be a part of this team,'' Mariotti said. ''This is the first time this school won sub-state. I hope state too. All of the girls taught me something and when I return to Italy, I hope to continue playing volleyball.''

While preparing for state, the Jays have received a lot of support from random people on the street who now recognize them and classmates and teachers of a school known primarily for its football team.

''It's really exciting,'' senior Lily Thornberg said. ''Volleyball was always overlooked. Everybody knew about volleyball, but we never got a lot of public support. I was walking through the mall and I told someone I was from Junction City and they said 'Your volleyball team is pretty good now'. I have gotten recognized in public and it went from everyone looking down on Junction City volleyball to now we are getting noticed.''

The Jays begin pool play Friday at the Topeka Expocentre at 8 a.m. against Washburn Rural, then play Garnder-Edgerton at 11 a.m. and wrap with a game against Blue Valley North at 12:30 p.m.
