Junction City wins sub-state volleyball tourney

The Junction City Lady Jays volleyball team will make its first appearance at the state tournament in Junction City High School history after winning the Sub-State tournament Saturday.

Lady Jays' senior Shanna Witt may have a reputation for her hard spikes, but it was a soft tip that vaulted the Jays over the Topeka Lady Trojans during the Sub-State finals.

Prior to beating the sixth seeded Lady Trojans, the Lady Jays earned only their second win in JCHS history by upsetting the third seeded Manhattan Lady Indians after beating them in three sets (25-19, 17-25 and 25-16). Jays' coach Megan Parks believes Saturday's win further intensified the already existing rivalry between JCHS and Manhattan High School.

“The wins were both in the same year,” Parks said. “The girls have been wanting this since they started on the varsity team as freshmen. The rivalry existed, but its even better now.”

During the first set against Manhattan, the Lady Jays and the Lady Indians played neck and neck, tied 18-18, until the Lady Jays put up four unanswered points to pull away 23-19, capping off the win with a spike from Witt. After languishing for much of the second set, the Lady Jays held the Lady Indians at match point four times before the Lady Indians finally sealed the win. The Lady Jays answered back in the third set by crushing the Lady Indians, who could not keep pace. A Witt spike put the Lady Jays up 22-14 and moments later they went on a three point scoring run with serves from Witt, a block by Witt and sophomore Courtney Maury and a spike by junior Alex Wood for the win.

“Manhattan beat us on senior night, we wanted revenge and we finally got it,” senior Erika Goodwin said. “To get our revenge and go to state, makes it that much better.”

The Lady Jays then faced the Lady Trojans, who worked their way into the Sub-State finals after upsetting the second seeded Derby Lady Panthers in three sets. The Lady Jays crushed Topeka 25-6 in the first set and did not let their blowout win go to their heads. In the second set the teams traded points until the Lady Jays went on a five point scoring run with a spike and an ace by Witt and blocks by Wood and Maury.

“We prepared all week for Manhattan and Derby and it was a real shocker when we saw we had to play Topeka, but we stuck together and we could have beat anybody tonight,” senior Lily Thornberg said. “After the first set, we all talked about how we can't let up. We can't lose focus of our goal and they are still in the way.”

In previous interviews, Witt said the seven seniors on the Jays' roster will not fully cement their legacy at JCHS until they took their team to state. After winning Sub-State and making it to the state tournament, she feels the Lady Jays finally met the lofty goals they set each season.

“We've had high expectations ever since we entered high school, but we've never been to state,” Witt said. “The state tournament has always been within our grasp, but we never grabbed it. Tonight, we got it.”

The Jays will begin pool play at 8:30 a.m. Friday against the top seeded Washburn Rural Lady Junior Blues at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka. Washburn Rural seeks its second consecutive state championship.
