Moyer: Animals stars of juvenile nonfiction

The library has been encouraging kids to ''read real'' this semester and to explore the juvenile nonfiction collection. This section holds every topic under the sun, including the sun, and among the most read are those that have something to do with animals.

Kids and animals go together like peanut butter and jelly. This makes animal books a great choice for young readers, particularly reluctant readers, as well as kids who don't really enjoy fiction. Both will find many titles to choose from in the special collection of animal books that is currently located at the entrance to the Young People's Department as well as those in the 590's portion of the juvenile nonfiction collection and which include everything from invertebrates (592) to mammals (599).

Kids who like to ''read around the world'' might start in South America with ''Piranhas'' by Elaine Landau (J 597.4). This title provides an introduction to the various species of this predator, discusses their reputation as killers, describes their physical characteristics and habits, as well as their suitability as pets. It also sheds light on the mystery of the piranhas that have been discovered in the United States, far from their natural home, in the Midwestern states of Nebraska and Iowa.

Swans (J 598.418) can be found in many parts of the world including the tundra swans in Russia. They are among the seven species included in the Nature's Children series title by Tim Harris, which offers information on the physical characteristics, habits and habitats of each of them. Harris' work also includes a glossary with important words to know such as cob, pen and cygnet, the names for male, female and young swans, respectively.

Antarctica is often associated with those friends of Mr. Popper, penguins (J 598.47), which are the subjects of Amy-Jane Beer's entry in the Nature's Children series. It offers an introduction to the physical characteristics and habits of the seventeen species, large to small, including the emperor, king, gentoo, chinstrap, Adelie, Humboldt, Magellanic, macaroni, royal, African, erect-crested, Fiordland, rockhopper, yellow-eyed, Snares, Galapagos and little penguins.

A literary trip Down Under would not be complete without a read about kangaroos (J 599.2). Sandra Markles' ''Outside and Inside Kangaroos,'' is a good start with its descriptions of the inner and outer workings of kangaroos, including their diet, anatomy, and life cycle. This includes why they can jump as much as twenty-seven feet in one bound, what happens when their teeth wear out from grinding up plants, and how their babies can survive when they are only the size of a bumblebee at birth?

Mali is the locus of Helen Cowcher's ''Desert Elephants'' (J 599.67) who each year travel a 300-mile path in search of water, the longest migration route of any elephant in the world. They pass through the lands of the Tuareg, Dogon and Fulani peoples who have followed their travels for many years, including the Tuareg Nomads who have the saying ''We live with the elephants, and the elephants live with us.''

Learning to do the same with gorillas (J 599.884) is a current challenge including those numbered among the 25 species of endangered primates that was reported earlier this month by the International Union for Conservation. Titles such as ''Gorillas and Their Babies'' by Marianne Johnston and ''The Mountain Gorilla'' by Alison Imbriaco help students develop an understanding of these creatures including how they live in both the wild and captivity and why some are facing extinction.

These and many more animal books await the attention of young readers in the juvenile nonfiction collection. All can serve as a gateway to the world and the fascinating creatures that populate it. All are also possible ways to reach kids who like to ''read real'' and can do so with a little help from their public library.
