Seiser: A very new experience

Let's just say it hasn't exactly been quiet or boring at The Daily Union office the past several weeks — at times, it has been downright noisy and exciting.

Last week and early into this week, the Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce hauled in dozens of boxes and rolled in desks, chairs and other equipment, making their move into The Daily Union building.

As I write this, there are workers on ladders still finishing parts of the efforts to keep the two entities separated as much as possible while still procuring the open feel of the building.

While nearly complete now, the work started several weeks ago as plans were being made to the inside of the building to separate The Daily Union from the leased Chamber space.

Offices had to be moved, areas in the building that were used for storage were cleared out all to allow the chamber the space it needed. There are glass windows between our area and theirs. Some of the changes have been easy, while others are taking a little more getting used to.

But even as the pounding drilling and scraping resumed this week for the finishing touches, it is already apparent, this is a great opportunity for everyone here.

Having the chamber in this building has infused some energy, brought in more people, many of whom I don't know. Those are both good things. There also are some very familiar faces here every day with whom I look forward to getting to know even better.

In all honesty, it wasn't the best situation with the noise and disruption, but the end result has been and will be nothing but positive in my eyes.

At every newspaper I have worked at, there's been a good relationship between the newspaper staff and the chamber of commerce.

Even before the Chamber moved into our building, I felt that was the situation here. It is important the newspaper work closely with the chamber and vice versa.

There are some obvious similarities between what they do and what we do, but there really is not a complete understanding of each of our duties to our customers and the community.

That's where this can be beneficial to all in the building as we learn more about each organization's goals, needs and the personnel who make that all become a reality.

However, we must also be careful to not cross any lines. We are still a newspaper with the responsibility to cover the news and happenings in and around Junction City. The chamber's main goal is to help local businesses and improve the economic climate here in JC.

I assure everyone that those lines will not be crossed.

In honor of our new friends who have joined us on Sixth Street — here's my official welcome to the Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce and we look forward to the Convention and Visitor's Bureau joining us all soon.

It should be an interesting and educational experience for us all. I am looking forward to it and already enjoying it.
