Otte: Helping pastures deal with lingering effects of drought

The pastures have gone dormant now for the winter. In many cases that started back in July when the rain stopped, the thermometer shot up and clouds left the skies. Rains in late August and early September helped restore some soil moisture in the native pastures, but by then it was too late for grass plants to do much more than send up a few seed heads. We aren't out of this drought yet, however. We probably have had enough rain to get the pastures off to a good start next spring, but beyond that, it's still too early to know what to expect.

Regardless of what 2013 brings for precipitation, or when this drought really will break, there are some things that we do know. We need to remember that drought is a very natural part of the cycle for grasslands. There will be wet years, there will be dry years and there will be average years. Some dry years don't cause much reduction in yield, while others, like the current drought, are severe enough to be compared to the memorable droughts of the 1950s or 1930s.

Because most pastures are extremely low on available vegetation and fire fuel, I am not recommending prescribed burning except in a few special cases. CRP fields with heavy fuel or pastures that were partially burned by wildfires this year will both probably benefit from a burn. Everything else needs to be just left alone. Even if you are trying to get cedar trees under control, I think you just need to forget about burning in 2013.

Stocking rates need to be reduced next year. In a recent county agent meeting we had some spirited debate on how much we need to reduce stocking rates. Part of it is going to be on a pasture by pasture basis dependent on how the pasture looked coming out of this year. Some pastures may need to have stocking rates reduced by 50 percent. If the drought doesn't break, all pastures will need to be managed carefully and depopulated by mid-summer. What we finally agreed upon, as of right now, is that a good starting point would be to stock pastures at 65 to 75 percent of normal and then adjust as the summer moves on.

We do know that when the drought starts to break it will take two to five years for the grass to recover. Exactly how long depends on how hard it has been hit by grazing and what the condition of the pasture was going in to the drought. The shorter grasses, like side-oats or blue grama will come back faster than the bluestems or indiangrass. But barring extreme overgrazing, the species composition will return also. Don't try to overseed native grasses into areas that seem thin. This is a waste of money, time and effort.

Another known fact is that we can expect heavy forb growth for up to five years following drought. Forbs are anything that isn't brush or grass. Some people call them weeds, but many of them are normal perennial components of the tall grass prairie that add great value to the forage quality of the prairie. We will probably see a lot of annual broomweed next year (the spindly plant with the tiny yellow flower that blooms in the early fall.) Again, we know this is going to happen and we also know that it's usually a waste of money, time and effort to spray herbicides for weed control for these naturally occurring forbs. Invasive non-native forbs are another story however.

How fast the grasslands recover are dependent on when the drought breaks but also on how you manage the grasslands. Stocking rate affects both how badly the pasture is hit by the drought and how quickly it recovers. Let's start making plans now for making pasture management adjustments to give the grass a fighting chance.
