Childs: 'Wild Bill' briefly kept peace in Junction City

Last week Ron Harris introduced our readers to Daniel McCleery, the Junction City Marshal who served during the four years when our town was the destination for cowboys and cattle driven up the West Shawnee Cattle Trail from Texas. In March of this year, we re-introduced Tom Allen Cullinan, the colorful Irishman who followed McCleery into the Marshal's job in the late 1870s and for the next 30 years or so served our community under 18 mayors and ''by the common consent of the people was trusted to do all police duty and keep the peace in his own way.'' Today, we are going to share the local history of another who served as Junction City Marshal for a very short period between these two early lawmen, but was probably one of the most recognized characters in the Old West.

This early local celebrity was ''Wild Bill'' Hickok, the infamous gunfighter, who, according to community legend, first assumed his role of ''lawman'' in our town. Though there have been some choice accounts recorded about Hickok's days as the Marshal of Abilene, not much is documented about the time he spent in Junction City. Thus it was interesting to this writer to encounter a revealing tale concerning a Hickok escapade in our town while doing some research in an issue of the Junction City Sentinel printed in September of 1894. This, combined with other accounts collected over the years, paints a rather interesting picture of this dubious hero of the Old West. But to begin our tale let us attempt to put things in historical perspective.

James Butler Hickok was born in Illinois in 1837. In 1855, at about the age of 18, he made his way to the newly opened Kansas Territory with others who supported the ''free-state'' cause. Here he did farm work, traveled for a time as a teamster on the Santa Fe Trail, and drifted from one situation to another. 1861 found him at Rock Creek Station, a Pony Express stop on the Oregon Trail, near present-day Fairbury, Neb. He was employed to look after the horses by the station agent, but a quarrel over money led to a feud of sorts and in the process Hickok shot and killed three men. Though arrested for this deed, the case apparently was never brought to trial and Hickok went free. However, it was this incident that earned him the ''Wild Bill'' moniker and his gunfighter reputation.

During the Civil War years, the Union Army employed Hickok as a teamster and later as a scout. After the war he returned to Kansas where he continued to work for a time out of Fort Riley as a scout for the Army. In 1867, on one of his forays into western Kansas, Hickok met Henry Morton Stanley, a newspaper reporter who later gained international fame in Africa with Dr. Livingstone. Stanley described the gunfighter for his readers:

''James Butler Hickok commonly called 'Wild Bill' is one of the finest examples of that peculiar class known as frontiersman, ranger, hunter, and Indian scout. He is now 38 years old, and since he was 13 the prairie has been his home. He stands six feet and one inch in his moccasins, and is as handsome a specimen of a man as could be found. We were prepared, on hearing of 'Wild Bill's' presence in the camp, to see a person who might prove to be a course and illiterate bully. We were agreeably disappointed however. He was dressed in fancy shirt and leathern leggings. He held himself straight, and had broad, compact shoulders, was large chested, with a small waist and well-formed muscular limbs. A fine, handsome face, free from blemish, a light moustache, a thin pointed nose, bluish-grey eyes, with a calm look, a magnificent forehead, hair parted from the centre of the forehead, and hanging down behind the ears in wavy silken curls, made up the most picturesque figure.

''He is more inclined to be sociable than otherwise; is enthusiastic in his love for his country and Illinois, his native state; and is endowed with extraordinary power and agility, whose match in these respects it would be difficult to find. He has none of the swaggering gait, or the barbaric jargon ascribed to the pioneer by the Beadle penny-liners. On the contrary, his language is as good as many a one that boasts 'college learning.' He seems naturally fitted to perform daring actions. He regards with greatest contempt a man that could stoop low enough to perform 'a mean action,' and he is generous, even to extravagance.''

It was sometime after this encounter that Hickok apparently took up residence in Junction City. However, the aforementioned 1894 story, which verifies his presence in this vicinity, also refutes Stanley's opinion in regard to ''Wild Bill's'' attitude about ''mean actions.'' This account was part of an interview with another old Army scout, Dan Moran, and it was originally published in the Kansas City Times.

''I recall an adventure that 'Wild Bill' had with the late John A Anderson in Junction City, Kansas. John Anderson was only a Presbyterian minister then. That was years before he represented the Sunflower State in the halls of congress. His church then stood as it now stands on the south side of the public square. (Heritage Park) Anderson was a minister to the poor as well as everyone else and was very popular.

''Nearly everybody went armed in those days. The Indians had made several attacks on railroad hands and killed a number of them at different times, so that they went armed with needed guns. One day there was a construction train of 300 to 400 men in Junction City. It was payday and 'Wild Bill' was there that day. Whiskey ran like water. It seemed as though everybody was drinking. There were innumerable brawls and fights, but nothing serious until Bill and some of his old friends mounted their ponies and started out to 'do' the town. Their revolvers gleamed in the sun and occasionally a volley of shots would ring out as their horses plunged through the streets.

''Now Rev. John A. Anderson happened to be holding services that day and a large crowd filled the church building. 'Wild Bill' and party finally grew weary of racing their horses through the streets and Bill reined in his horse before the church. The door stood open and the pastor was in the pulpit. Bill urged his horse to the doorway and obedient to the rider's command the little animal entered the church. 'Wild Bill' sat in the saddle and drunkenly surveyed the minister and the congregation. The preacher paused in his discourse and gazing unflinchingly at the bold intruder ordered him to leave the church. Bill answered the preacher with an oath and asked him what he was doing.

''I am preaching the gospel,'' said Rev. Anderson.

'''No, you ain't preaching,'' said Bill, drawing back his revolver, ''You're dancing. That's what you're doing. Now dance, and dance lively!'' commanded Bill.

''The preacher remonstrated with Bill. Ladies crept under the seats and the male part of the congregation sat as though paralyzed. There was nothing else for the preacher to do but dance, for it was dance or die. So he danced.

''A courier hurried to the train, where a party of us scouts were gathered, and reported 'Wild Bill's' actions. There was a Mexican scout among us who could throw a lasso with wonderful precision. We took him and hurried to the church. Bill was still seated on his horse, laughing in drunken glee at the preacher, who was dancing for dear life.

''The Mexican crept up to the door. He paused, twirled the lasso above his head. It swished through the air and the loop fell over Bill's head; it dropped below his shoulders and the Mexican gave a quick jerk. The rope drew tight about Bill's body and pinned his arms to his side. A strong pull unseated Bill and we hauled him out of the church. You can imagine how relieved the preacher felt. The services were immediately dismissed.

''It was a narrow escape for Rev. Anderson, for Bill would surely have killed him had he not complied with his commands. We took Bill to the train and kept him until he sobered up. Then he went to Rev. Anderson and apologized. At the preacher's request, the episode was hushed up as much as possible at that time.''

One of the persistent stories told of Junction City's early days is that of ''Wild Bill'' Hickok's service as city marshal, but this has been difficult to document in city records. There is word-of-mouth evidence that Hickok was employed for a short time by Mayor R.O. Rizer to clean up Junction City in the early 1870s, although city council minutes make no mention of such employment. However, the following account by an ''old resident'' that was published in the Junction City Union in January of 1910, gives us some explanation as to how that may have happened.

''During the early part of 1870, when Robert O. Rizer was mayor of the town, 'Wild Bill' Hickok roomed with a woman who lived on West 6th Street next to the Rizer house. One day one of the cowboys from Abilene, who had been in town several days on a rampage, got into a dispute and as a result received a thrashing. He went to his camp in Abilene and in a few days sent word to the people of Junction that he, with his friends, would be back to shoot up the town the next day.

''Mr. Rizer wanted an extra good marshal for that day, and went over to see 'Wild Bill,' who always carried a brace of six shooters. He agreed to be deputized as city marshal for the day. On the scheduled time the cowboys arrived, but they were met at the outskirts of the town by 'Wild Bill' mounted on a white horse. At the sight of the fire-eating marshal, the cowboys turned tail and at breakneck speed they were chased a few miles west of town, followed by a volley of Hickok's oaths and shots.''

Though the tale has long been told that Mayor Rizer hired Hickok to ''clean up the town,'' it has never been clear whether he served for just this one day or for several months. We do know that within a year he had left Junction City and moved on, in 1871, to make his reputation as the Marshal of Abilene.
