Childs: 'Whistle stops' were staple of past presidential campaigns

With the Republican and Democratic nominating conventions now over, the 2012 presidential campaign is pulling into the final frantic stretch. The rhetoric has become heated and nasty as the candidates vie for the lead in the numerous polls that seem bent on calling this contest that has been too close to call for weeks. As Gov. Romney and President Obama, along with their spouses, their running mates and other advocates make repeated campaign stops and visits to the so-called battleground states that for some reason have been deemed the locales where this election will be decided, the rest of us can't help but wonder whether our votes will matter at all.

What has happened to the campaigns of yesteryear when the average American citizen in the cities and towns of the North and South, East and West, and yes, the Heartland of our nation looked forward to the chance to shake the hand or listen in person to the man who would be their leader? Why does everything each candidate says or does have to be dissected, interpreted and analyzed by pundits via electronic media before we have the chance to decide for ourselves whether we like the man or what he stands for? How long has it been since a presidential candidate made a stop in Kansas, or better still Junction City? Kansas City or Wichita may have drawn a primary candidate in recent years, but in Junction City does anyone remember a presidential candidate coming to our town?

We posed this same question 25 years ago in relation to presidential visits and received a positive and informative response from the late Lee Hornbaker, a well-known lawyer who lived and practiced in town for almost 50 years. He wrote, ''There are many, many people in Junction City who vividly recall the Sunday night in 1948, when President Harry Truman visited Junction City on his campaign train.'' This was the era when train travel was the most comfortable way to cross the country, and ''whistle stop'' campaigns had become a popular way for candidates to make a brief visit in many smaller towns and cities across the nation.

''He stopped down at the Union Pacific station on East Tenth Street late in the evening and appeared on the campaign platform of the train and made a few remarks and then introduced his wife, Bess Truman, and his daughter Margaret.'' Lee concluded, ''Although I have not read the book, I am told that Margaret Truman refers to this visit in her book about her father.''

A few days later, he graciously sent us a copy of page one of the book, Harry S. Truman,'' by Margaret Truman Daniels. There she begins her tale by recalling, ''We were in the sitting room of the presidential car, 'The Ferdinand Magellan,' racing across Kansas by night. The date was September 19, 1948, and my father, Harry S. Truman, was seated opposite me, reading a speech he would make the following day in Denver... . We had left Independence, Missouri, earlier in the day, and had made a whistle-stop visit to Junction City, Kansas, at 11:05 p.m.''

Armed with the date and even the time down to the minute, it was a simple matter to locate an account of this presidential visit in the Daily Union of September 20, 1948.

As Americans are once again being inundated with the hoopla and rhetoric of the campaign trails, it seems fitting to look back 64 years to that time when the candidates crisscrossed the country by train and people gathered at the depots and rail crossings throughout the land to see the campaigners and hear, first hand, what they had to say. After all, this was the president of the United States even though the chances of his keeping the job looked mighty slim at that point.

Under the headlines, ''Recalls Days at Fort Riley'' the Union reporter detailed the visit. ''President Harry Truman recalled his training days at Fort Riley during a brief stop by his campaign train in Junction City shortly after 11 o'clock Sunday night. The president was greeted by a huge crowd, for which estimates ranged as high as 6,000 or 7,000 persons.

''Appearing on the rear platform of his train Mr. Truman sensed that the crowd expected a talk and explained that 'he had made it a rule not to make political speeches on Sunday — never did from the time I started in politics 30 years ago'

''The smiling president then recalled that he was on familiar ground in Junction City. 'I came here to Fort Riley to train as a field artilleryman. Sometimes they tried to make a cavalryman out of me, but they didn't succeed,' he said.

(According to The American Heritage Book of the Presidents, Truman joined a Kansas City unit of the Missouri National Guard in 1905. When his unit was nationalized in World War I, he and a friend, Eddie Jacobson, were placed in charge of the regiment's canteen at Fort Riley, which under their direction actually made a profit. Truman was shipped to France as an artillery officer, but after the war he and Jacobson got together again and went into business.)

''I have been over this reservation from one end to the other,'' the president continued from the train platform. ''You know it is a peculiar thing about this reservation; the geographical center of the United States is on this reservation, and the monument marking it was moved by the authorities so people could see it. So you have the distinction of having moved the center of the United States a quarter-of-a-mile so people could look at it. No community in the country has been able to move the center of the United States, or any other center for that matter, but you did!

''As he concluded his remarks, the president inquired whether the audience 'would like to meet my family,' and received a chorus of approval. As Mrs. Truman stepped out onto the platform, the president commented, 'here comes the boss,' and then, 'now Margaret,' as his daughter came onto the platform. All remained there until the train pulled out and waved goodbye to the crowd.''

Those local citizens who had enjoyed any connection with the visit, for a while, became celebrities. Geary County attorney, A.S. Humprey had the honor of introducing the president in Junction City. He had traveled to Kansas City to ride back here on the presidential train. Rea Cress, local Democratic chairman, was called to the platform to meet the president as the train arrived. Even those who drove the train basked in the spotlight.

''Archie LeClair, who spent his boyhood days in Junction City and did some of his 47 years of railroading here, brought the train here from Kansas City, and engineer M.L. (Doc) Wilson, 336 W. Sixth St., was the engineer from Junction City to Ellis. Mr. Wilson, who also started his railroading career in Junction City, in 1905, admitted it was a thrill to handle the controls for the presidential train. It was the first president's train ever operated by either of the veteran engineers.''

Junction City's nine-minute campaign visit was rather lengthy in comparison to the three minutes spent in Topeka or the five-minute stop the train made in Salina. Only ''slow-ups'' were granted the crowds which had gathered to see the train pass in Russell and Hays.

I suppose our modern media has its advantages for we do get to see, hear, and be privy to every success and every mistake made by those who would be our leaders. Yet, with that thought in mind, we might consider the idea that the days of the whistle-stop campaigns were indeed, ''the good old days'' after all.
