Parsons: JC Arts increasing after-hours programs

One of the major changes that patrons of the arts will begin to see at JC Arts is an increase of after-hours programming and hopefully a return of after-school programming.

In most communities like ours the arts are not a 9-5 operation, our work gets done on weekends and after hours. As we prioritize what is important, we look at the needs in the community and try to align those with our reductions in resources. We have become a facility where you don't have to wait for a special event to have something to do, but now we will work on changing the hours to make our programs accessible to more people.

Preschool classes resume

I am pleased that among several other classes we are able to bring our preschool class back. Starting Oct. 3, we have an instructor for the preschool class that was so popular last year. The classes are designed to introduce preschoolers to new arts and give them the opportunity to have hands-on experiences with the arts.

The class is every Wednesday at noon.

Japanese Calligraphy

The ancient art of Japanese Calligraphy comes alive in this class. Come learn the artistic writing of the Japanese language using brush and ink. The instructor is Kimberly Scaler who learned pen and ink calligraphy about 10 years ago and started working with the Japanese form of calligraphy five years ago.

This class is perfect for those who are interested in Japanese art and culture as well as those simply looking to learn the basics of new skill.

The class is every Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Elementary Art Class

The Saturday Elementary Art Class is for children in grades kindergarten through five. In this class the kids learn a range of art techniques, art history and work with many different mediums. Most projects are completed in one day, but some may take two or more weeks to complete.

The classes are every Saturday at noon.

Adult Painting Class

Sometimes the hardest part of painting is finding the time to devote to picking up your brush and getting started. Come down to the gallery every Thursday evening and join a group of local painters. This is an informal group led by local artist Jacob Keehn. He has been guiding attendees in the techniques of abstract painting, but welcomes all genres.

The class is every Thursday at 6 p.m.

Drawing Techniques

This class is ideal for those interested in taking their drawing skills to the next level. Instructor Michael Gray is an active duty soldier and talented artist who can show you how to bring your work alive. He will work with all ages who are interested in learning.

The class is every Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

Concepts of Art Therapy

Art Therapy is the therapeutic use of art by people experiencing challenges in their life and by those seeking personal development.

Through the creation of art we find mechanisms for coping with stress and learn to release emotions and thoughts that are locked away.

In this class you will learn the concepts of art therapy and the role it can play in your life. Those who are interested in learning how to use the arts as a positive way to transfer emotion are invited to attend this exciting class.

The class is every Saturday beginning at 3 p.m.

Registration and payment for classes

Registration is recommended for each class. Only those who are preregistered can be notified in the event of a change to the schedule. Additionally, our space is limited if classes get filled those who are preregistered have preference over walk-ins.

Registration can be made by calling (785) 762-2581 or going on-line at www.junctioncityac.org. Most of our classes are $6 for non-members and $5 for members. Supplies requirements vary, check the website or call for supply information. Punch cards are available that are good for any five classes; punch cards are $30 for non-members and $25 for members.

Volunteers Needed

Nearly all of our programming is now being handled by volunteers, with an occasional contract instructor. If you have artistic skills or talents that you would like to share please give me a call and let's see if we can get a class started.
