Otte: Sharp pointed weed seeds are everywhere

Since it started raining, I have been inundated with phone calls about ''sandburs'' or ''goats heads.'' Sandburs are the most common complaint but I always have to clarify what plant folks are calling about. There are two very different plants and some of the controls for them are vastly different.

There is the version that looks like a grass and the multi-spined seeds love to get into socks, laces and cuffs. This is field sandbur or what I will just call grass sandbur as it is a grass. The other plant, puncture vine, is the one that grows flat on the ground from a single taproot, has a yellow flower and can grow to several feet across. The seeds are usually borne in a cluster of four and they will have one or two long, strong and sharp points. This one gets into the bottoms of your shoes and flattens your bicycle tires. This is a broadleaf weed.

Both weeds are annuals and will die with the first frost. Both weeds are prolific seed producers and where you had problems this year, you will have problems next year. So make a note of where you found them this year. Both of these plants are very well suited to growing in hot, droughty, even sandy soils. They love the edge of driveways, walkways or anyplace with hard packed soil, open space and no competition. The seeds of both will also live in the soil for several years so any control measures will need to be continued for three or four or five years, or more!

For right now, the best thing you can do is to put on some heavy leather gloves and pull up as many of the plants that you can find as possible, being very careful to try to keep the seeds with the plants. Then deposit the plants in the trash or a burn barrel for destruction or removal. Seedlings of each can be controlled with appropriate herbicides. Puncture vine can be treated with broadleaf killers like the dandelion killers and grass sandbur with the crabgrass killers. These plants can both sprout, grow and produce seed in just a few weeks. After you have removed as many as you can find, spray the area with a post emerge killer, appropriate to whatever weed you had there. This will help reduce the number of small plants out there trying to produce seed yet this fall.

The next critical step will be next spring, late March or early April. At this time you want to apply crabgrass preventers to the areas of infestation that you had this year. It's very important to read and follow label directions. Several of the products will require re-treatment part way through the growing season to provide season long control. Remember, these rascals can sprout in early September and still produce seed before frost. You really do want season long control! Not all crabgrass preventers have sandbur or puncture vine on their label. If they aren't on the label they may or may not control the plant. If you want to make sure, check that it's on the label.

The next step begins about June 1. At that time, both puncture vine and grass sandburs will be starting to germinate and grow. Since many homeowners can not identify these seedlings, without their seeds, you need to be aware that you probably do have some small seedlings coming through the crabgrass preventer. Hopefully the preventers get 80 or 90 percent of them, but that isn't good enough. Go back to the trouble areas and apply your broadleaf weed spray or your crabgrass killer to those areas.

Follow label directions! Then repeat this process at four week intervals as allowed by the label. These two plants are a pain in wherever you just got stuck by the seed, but we can get them under control with a dedicated effort.
