Fort Riley remembers fallen at ceremony

Flags flew in a steady breeze Tuesday morning in front of the U.S. Cavalry Museum as the names of 16 Fort Riley soldiers who were killed in action or died of wounds were read.

Fort Riley officials conducted a ceremony to rededicate the Global War on Terrorism Monument and add to it the soldiers’ names. The soldiers were deployed or mobilized through Fort Riley.

The ceremony also honored those killed on Sept. 11, 2001, and recognized soldiers who have since been killed or wounded in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Brig. Gen. Don MacWillie addressed a somber yet proud audience.

“These attacks were designed to break us as a nation,” he said. “Eleven years later, we’re still standing.”

Some family members of soldiers whose names were on the monument attended the ceremony.

For Sierra Herring, the ceremony represented a time to remember her late husband, Joseph Listner, who was stationed at Fort Riley and killed in action in 2003.

Herring said she has mixed feelings about events such as Tuesday’s ceremony.

“It is an honor, I mean, but the selfish part of you wishes he was still here,” she said.

After Listner died, Herring had to raise their son, Micah Listner, alone. She said the trials of being a parent were hard, but Micah was her anchor. He kept her going.

“I never felt like we had an option,” Herring said. “We still had a child to raise, still had a life to live.”

Herring is now married to Listner’s friend, who also serves in the Army. They have been stationed at Fort Polk in Louisiana for the last three years with their three daughters and Micah.

Still, some days are harder than others, especially when ceremonies such as Tuesday’s stir difficult emotions. She shared some advice for people dealing with the loss of a family member who has served.

“Today may be a crappy day, a terrible day and you won’t always see the sunshine,” Herring said. “Tomorrow will be a brighter day.”

During the ceremony, MacWillie reminded the audience what the soldiers’ names on the monument represent.

“Each of them represents our community,” he said. “They represent our values, and they represent our pride and admiration.”

For some people, such as Herring and Micah, the names represent more. The names represent spouses, parents and heroes who gave everything.
