Childs: Vice brought wrath of mothers in Junction City

The well known adage, ''Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned,'' could well have been rewritten by the readers of the Junction City Union during the early years of the 20th century to read, ''Hell hath no fury like a women whose son has been led into vice!'' Though this was the era of Carrie Nation's famed saloon smashing campaign against ''demon rum,'' it was also a period when saloons and other ''dens of iniquity'' had a well-known and accepted presence in our town in spite of the fact that selling alcoholic beverages had been illegal in Kansas since 1881.

At this time the east side of Washington Street from Sixth to 10th streets was the location of a number of well-known and well-photographed saloons and young ladies were cautioned that ''nice girls never walk on the east side of Washington.'' The Junction City Directory for 1905 lists more than a dozen drinking establishment in or near that four-block stretch, and according to Bartell author Susan Franzen, even the respectable Bartell House maintained a bar in its basement with an outside entrance from the sidewalk in front of the hotel.

When the members of the local Women's Christian Temperance Union sought help from Carrie Nation, she refused to come to Junction City because ''every man operating a saloon in Junction City at this time is doing so under the sanction and protection of the city.'' This was the situation that led two local mothers to action. Each became a Carrie Nation-style ''joint-smasher,'' individually and on her own and the accounts are worth sharing.

The first incident occurred on April 25, 1901, and was reported in that evening's Daily Union:

''Mrs. C.K. Coover attempted to wreck the Exchange saloon, first door north of Ellis's grocery store on Washington Street. Officers Cullinan and Cooper were promptly called and Mrs. Coover was placed under arrest. Practically no damage was done, as the lady was seized before she got her hatchet into good play. Two common bar tumblers were all that was broken.

''Mrs. Anna Coover is the wife of Engineer Coover of the Union Pacific, and claims that one of her sons was recently robbed in gambling game either in the Exchange saloon or a similar place. When arrested she offered no resistance but simply expressed the desire that she be allowed to retain possession of her hatchet. The inmates of the joint were apparently considerably more excited than Mrs. Coover.''

By the next morning when Mrs. Coover appeared before the judge, word of her action had spread through town and a throng of supporters and others who were just curious had gathered at the Police Court room. She had obtained Junction City founder, the respected James McClure, as her lawyer and he immediately moved that the complaint be dropped and ''the warrant be quashed.'' This motion was over-ruled and she the defendant pled ''not guilty.''

''Joe Zeek, one of the proprietors of the Exchange, was the first witness examined. He stated that Mrs. Coover came into his place of business and passed to the rear door of the room; that immediately there after, she turned and came up to the bar, carrying what appeared to be an ordinary shoe box. Then she took from said box what she called a 'new patent,' and said she proposed to show him how to use it; then she came behind the bar and began breaking glasses. When he saw her raise the hammer to break the large and costly mirror behind the bar he grabbed her and tried to take the hammer from her. She thereupon said for him not to hurt her or she would kill him. He then pushed her from behind the bar and called for assistance.

Upon cross examination Mr. Zeek was asked what property was destroyed and he replied that five bar tumblers and a ground-glass ornamental bar bottle were broken and the value of these items was about 65 cents. When asked why he called for assistance to hold Mrs. Coover he replied that he could not hold her alone. ''This remark caused an outburst of laughter on the part of the spectators and it was necessary for Marshal Cullinan to call for order.''

Two soldiers who were in the saloon at the time of the incident were the only other witnesses called and they revealed no new information. Then Marshal Cullinan stated that when she refused to hand him her hammer he removed her to the police court room.

Lawyer McClure then stated that the defense would offer no testimony and requested that the case be dismissed. ''But the court took an opposite view and pronounced the prisoner guilty as charged and assessed a fine of $10 and costs.'' The prisoner was to be jailed until the fine and costs were paid, but an appeal to the district court was immediately made and Mrs. Coover's bond was set at $100. Immediately several citizens who were in the courtroom came forward anxious to pay the bond for the lady.

''Many prominent ladies were in attendance at the trial and watched the proceedings with keen interest. Their sympathy is strongly in favor of Mrs. Coover, the testimony in the case having developed the fact that a son of the defendant was, at the time the violence was attempted, in the yard at the rear of the place in an intoxicated condition!''

The other ''Hell hath no fury'' demonstration by a local woman took place one hot August evening in Junction City in 1905. The Union recorded the whole effort in entertaining detail.

''Junction City has a 'Carrie Nation' who did some mighty effective work here Saturday night in helping to break up gambling in the city. She is a colored woman. She was armed with a broomstick, and she put over thirty men to route in less time that it takes to tell it.

''For some time the police force has been looking for a colored gambling joint. They knew that one existed here and they knew that it was on East 6th Street, but up to Saturday night they did not know its exact location.

''It seems that on Saturday a son of Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Crews had $16. When the boy went home late Saturday night, all his money was gone. His mother questioned him about it and learned where he had gambled his money away. Then she came downtown and told the night policemen if they would follow her she would show them where there was a gambling joint. Mrs. Crews led them to the home of Henry Watson, colored, on East 6th Street. The policemen said they were about 50 feet behind her when she approached the house.

''When Mrs. Crews arrived she kicked the door down and revealed to her and the policemen's sight were more than thirty Negroes and whites sitting around two poker tables on which were great piles of chips and cards.

''As soon as the door settled to the floor, Mrs. Crews sailed into the mob with her broomstick and began knocking the gamblers down, right and left. A stampede of the gamblers followed. They fought among themselves at every window in the house to be the first out. One Negro made a dive though one of the windows on the lower level and in going out he knocked out the stick that held the window up. Another Negro tried to dive out of the same window and took the glass, frame and all out with him. When he raced up the street in making his get-away he still had the window frame hanging around his neck.

''Nearly all of the windows of the house and the porch posts were knocked down. The place was completely wrecked by the frightened gamblers. During the stampede the policemen were helpless. It was all they could do to keep from getting run over. When Mrs. Crews finished her job there wasn't a person left in the house.

''On Sunday there was a pale lot of Negro gamblers around town. Probably most of them will get into police court today or tomorrow. The tinhorn whites who were there have not been conspicuous since the raid. Henry Watson, at whose place the gambling was being done, has been arrested and he will be tried in police court this evening.''

Perhaps it was the attitudes and incidents like these that motivated the Temperance advocates in Junction City to action, for by the end of 1906 enough pressure had been brought to bear to force city officials to finally enforce the law where drinking establishments were concerned and Junction City went dry — at least for a period of several years. Indeed, in our town it appears a ''woman scorned'' pales in comparison to a woman whose son has been taken advantage of!
