Shirley McGill

Shirley Jo Pechin McGill, age 75, of Manhattan, died Monday, Sept. 3, 2012 at the Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan.

She was born on July 17, 1937 in Junction City, the daughter of William and Hazel (Gfeller) Pechin. She attended schools in the Junction City area. On March 16, 1957 in Newkirk, Oklahoma she was untied in marriage to Joel McGill. He survives at their home in Manhattan.

Shirley owned and operated S Bar J Western Clothiers in downtown Manhattan for 27 years.

She was a lifetime member of the Kaw Valley Rodeo Association, where she served many years on the board of directors as ticket chairwoman.

Also she was a member of the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce and other various downtown merchant associations.

Shirley was an avid gardener and green thumb, who lived to share her passion for plants and flowers with her family and friends. She also enjoyed collecting and selling antiques.

She loved her family, preparing family dinners, and having her family all together during the holidays.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Don Pechin, William “Buzz” Pechin Jr., and also her sisters, Leona Pechin Coslet and Lois Pechin Rousse.

In addition to her husband, Joel, she is also survived by her children: Matthew McGill, of Manhattan, Susan Weir, of Manhattan, Laurie Duncan and her husband Doug Williams, of Manhattan, and Julie McClure, of Euless, Texas.

Additional survivors include her brothers, Richard “Dick” Pechin, of Venice, Florida, and her sister, Deanna Henry and her husband Butch, of Junction City; her grandchildren: Miles Duncan, Mitchell Duncan and his wife Sherry, Amanda Apelgren, Ryan Platt, and Austin Platt, Brian Weir, Amy Weir, and her great-grandchild, Michaela Duncan, all of Manhattan. She is also survived by her many extended family members and friends.

Funeral services for Mrs. McGill will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, 2012 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Joyce Allen officiating. Interment will follow in the Highland Cemetery in Junction City.

The family will greet friends during a visitation from 4 until 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
