Despite limited funding, JC Arts continues mission

Changes are under way at JC Arts relating to staffing, space, hours of operation, and focus.

“We knew several months ago that we had enough funding to get through our summer youth programs, that was extremely important to us, but it was doubtful that we would be able to do much more after that,” said JC Arts Director Gail Parsons. “I am pleased that we will be able to keep moving forward with classes and activities.”

The focus in the coming months will be on increasing the classes and evening activities. New classes for children and adults are being offered and include; Tuesdays at 6 p.m. beginning Sept. 11, Japanese Calligraphy; every Thursday at 6 p.m. an adult painting class, suitable for teens and adults; on Saturdays at noon is and elementary art class for children in grades K-5, at 1:30 is a drawing technique class for the more serious artist, and beginning Sept. 22 from 3 to 4:30 a class covering the concepts of art therapy.

Additional classes in the process of being set up and will include another painting class, and glass working class. As those and other classes are set up the information will be available online at www.junctioncityac.org.

JC Arts will also put a focus on expanding its Murder for Hire program, where it takes its murder mystery performances on the road to private events.

“The Murder for Hire has been great,” Parsons said. “We will still do our public performances, but the private events are fun too because we can really personalize them for the audience. We’ve done them for state-wide conventions, birthday parties; we’ve gone out of town for some of them; we even did one during the Medics Holiday Ball.”

Another priority will be to put more emphasis on the promotion of local artists. JC Arts has several artists represented in its Gallery, but there is a need to put more time into promoting their work.

Volunteers will continue to be a vital part of the organization because among the changes is that the paid staff is down to one part-time position. Additionally, one of the two spaces that JC Arts was renting has been given up.

With the limited hours of paid staff, rather than having set hours of operation during the business day, the hours will revolve around the classes and activities that are being planned afterschool and in the evenings.
