Childs: Cowboy polo once a local Labor Day staple

A few days ago it was announced that five legendary Kansas cowboys would be honored for their contributions to western life by their induction into the Kansas Cowboy Hall of Fame on Sept. 15 in Dodge City. Among these 2012 inductees is the late William F. ''Bill'' Ebbutt, who was born, grew up, and spent his life as a cattleman and rancher in southern Geary County. The name rang a bell with this writer and when his grandson brought a copy of the media release to the museum this week, he confirmed that indeed his grandfather was the ''Billy'' Ebbutt who had been part of the famed Humboldt Cowboy polo team that had played against the crack Fort Riley teams during the early years of the 20th century.

A number of years ago long-time GCHS member Josephine Grammer Munson, who will soon celebrate her 100th birthday, wrote several Museum Musings articles on polo at Fort Riley and Junction City. One of these addressed this unique Humboldt farm-boy team. In as much as the Labor Day holiday was often marked by day-long polo matches during this era, today seems an appropriate time to share an edited version of Josephine's polo tales once again.

The officers at Fort Riley began to play polo in the 1890s with the formation of the Cavalry School. At first there were no teams, merely a few of the men knocking the ball around while riding their horses. The first real games were played with a St. Louis team in 1896. These games were played on the Republican Flats near the old pump house.

The Spanish-American War put a stop to the polo playing, so it wasn't until 1904 that much organized polo again took place. During that year the first Junction City polo team was organized consisted of Dr. Fred O'Donnell, Si Rogers, Louis Loeb and Bruce Grant. This team, with minor changes existed for about 20 years, always having Louis Loeb and Dr. O'Donnell as players. Others who often played with the team included veterinarian Dr. Fretz, merchant Ed Early, banker Hal Pierce, Union editor Harry Montgomery, Mayor H.D. Thompson, druggist A.N. Miller and builder Fred Ziegler.

Many local people remember watching the men practice on a field located in Junction City that was bounded by Ash, Webster, Pine and Madison streets. Most of the games during this time were held on the Smoky Hill Flats (now Marshall Field), near where the Whiskey Lake Country Club was located.

Concerning the Junction City team that played between 1907 and 1911, Lt. Col. Lewis Brown recalled, ''One of the features of the game in those days was a cowpony owned by Hal Pierce named 'Curly.' When Doctor O'Donnell instructed Pierce to 'ride off number four' or any other player, Hal would invariably ride the player to the sideboard or to the corner of the field and hold him there. When Hal was mounted on this pony, it was wholly impossible to get away from him, or by him, and it was a great source of amusement to see him corner such excellent horsemen as Col. Guy V. Henry and Maj. J.C. Montgomery.''

About this same time, a group of young men and boys of the Humboldt Valley, east of Junction City, spent Sunday afternoons riding their ponies, having races and other contests among themselves. The young men who met regularly to ride included Jesse and Pete Langvardt, Bill and Paul Schmedemann, Emil and Louie Zumbrunn, Carl Best, Billie Ebbutt and George Stonebreaker.

Capt. William Pride, in his History of Fort Riley, published in 1926, tells of this polo team: ''In the spring of 1907 a team was organized which deserves a place in history it has never received. It was probably the only team of its kind, and it was composed of cowboys who had a style of play all their own. This 'Humboldt Cowboys' team played their first polo match with a Fort Riley team in the fall of 1907.''

Concerning this team Captain Pride quotes Lt. Col. Beverly Brown as follows: ''The Humboldt team always brought a crowd of rooters and looked very picturesque coming down the Mormon Trail, (roughly the Humboldt Road). They frequently drove ponies hitched to runabouts and buggies, and after arrival, they unhitched them and saddled them up and played them in the polo game. They used stock saddles entirely, and their ponies, as a rule, followed the ball very well. Their teamwork was rather baffling and quite successful for some time. When the player ran over the ball, he turned toward the center of the field and went to the rear of his team. While this left no one ahead of the ball, it produced an absolutely continuous stream of Humboldt players on the ball, and since the field was none too good, the system was far from bad.

''These games were always played on Sundays or holidays, and the teams were generally the Mounted Service School, the Sixth Field Artillery, Junction City and Humboldt. Sometimes a round robin was played, and at other times, the teams were paired off, alternating two periods at a time. Marshall Field was where these games were played.''

''The Humboldt Team came to Fort Riley to play, for the first time in the fall of 1907,'' Captain Pride writes. ''They were royally entertained, and desired to return the compliment, so they invited a team to come down and play on their own field, which was on the Henry Schmedemann farm. The team they played was an enlisted men's team from the Sixth Field Artillery. All preparations had been made and refreshments were abundant. The Fort Riley team rode down in wagons and told the cowboys the drivers were not to partake of the refreshments. But the cowboys of 1908 were little different than those of '88, except for the absence of six-shooters. And the drivers were persuaded to partake of the hospitality of Humboldt. The Fort Riley team won the polo game, but reliable sources reported that some of the players walked part of the way home, and the polo equipment and ponies were scattered liberally along the road that night.

''An accident during the play of the Humboldt team, which was usually a natural result of their equipment, made the point that a broken mallet was no handicap to a member of this team. The player merely took the piece that was left, grabbed the horn of his saddle, and by bending down, played the ball as though nothing had happened.''

This incident showed the Fort Riley teams that the stock saddles used by the Humboldt cowboys had some advantage over the English saddles the Fort Riley teams were using. So they insisted that the Humboldt team change to English saddles. This was totally against the cowboy style, so the competition soon died out. By this time the Humboldt boys were getting married and scattered, thus their polo games came to an end.

The Humboldt cowboy polo team lasted only four or five years at most. However, the families of these original Humboldt polo players have shared many memories of the stories told to them by their fathers. Arthur Zumbrunn remembers riding his father's polo pony as a boy: He said, ''That pony could really turn quickly.'' Bessie Ebbutt Wildman provided the photo of her father, Bill Ebbutt, with his polo ponies and also one with his sister, Edith Ebbutt Best. Others who contributed memories for this article include Jesse Langvardt and Jr. and Elizabeth Best Schmedemann.

In his book, Captain Pride said that the status of polo at Fort Riley in the early years was due, to a great extent, to the Junction City and Humboldt teams. Without their interest and support, the growth and development of polo at Fort Riley would have been much slower that it was. The last game between Junction City and Fort Riley was played in about 1923.

Captain Pride also paid tribute to the Junction City team's major leader, Dr. Fred O'Donnell. ''As a player he was a fighter and a tremendously hard rider, and, while he put a great deal of temper into the game, he never carried any of it over the sideboards and was always a fine example to the rest of us in the conduct of our polo. Really, without Dr. O'Donnell, polo at Fort Riley would have been an entirely different affair. He was an inspiration to all.''

\In later years the Fort Riley polo field was located on the Republican flats, (now Camp Forsyth.) A polo bungalow built in 1920 and demolished in the 1980s was a popular meeting place for the players and their families on game days.
