Childs: Finding entertainment in summer's 'Dog Days'

As we enjoy these past few cooler days in what is normally considered the ''Dog Days'' of summer, we can't help but reflect on how those stalwart pioneers who settled our area kept their spirits up during this most miserable time of the year in Kansas. Recently, Ron Harris of the GCHS staff, while researching pioneer trails in the local newspapers, stumbled on to an entertaining account that gives us an idea of the type of entertainment that our Junction City founders resorted to during the dog days of summer.

The first mention that something out of the ordinary was a foot appeared in Editor George W. Martin's Junction City Union of July 3, 1869: ''We understand the preliminaries of the Prize Fight have been concluded between Barney Bohan of Chapman Creek and Jim Cooper of Denver. The money, one hundred dollars forfeit, has been put up, and the fight is to come off on the 31st of July, somewhere within five or ten miles of Junction City.''

Martin then, in typical fashion, assumed his role as Junction City's moral authority and expressed his opinion of this frivolous pastime. ''St Louis and Kansas City may put on airs, but Junction will show them a fine touch. We hope the report of the fight may read thus: First Round—both men came up lively; each received a blow which whirled him cold. Seconds carried both men off the field dead. That would advance the 'manly art' and civilization much better than any other result.''

Despite his obvious disdain for the planned entertainment, Martin seemed to feel it his duty to keep citizens informed of preparations for in the Union of July 17, 1869, we read: ''The sparring match advertised for last Saturday night at Brown's hall, for the benefit of Jim Cooper, champion from California, fizzled for the reason that proprietor of the hall objected. The fightists then adjourned to a vacant room near the Office Saloon. Cooper wouldn't come to time as advertised, so Barney had to contend himself with an occasional set-to with amateurs. After the close of the performance the amateurs opened another entertainment which was not in accordance with strictest rule of the P.R., and the marshal was brought into requisition.'' (Martin was an avid ''temperance man'' and never missed an opportunity to ridicule those who succumbed to the evils of drink.)

Martin's scorn for the imbiber was again evident in his report on the preparations for the fight printed the following week. ''The approaching contest between Bohan and Cooper in the prize ring for the championship of Kansas and $500 is creating a tremendous excitement.... The trainer of Cooper the celebrated pugilist and champion of California, was drunk, boisterous and on the rampage Thursday afternoon, and bid defiance to all authority, where upon the pestiferous and hostile individual was beset by one Dan, whose surname in McCleery, commonly known as the city Marshal of Junction City, who sought to lay hands upon him and inveigle him into the meshes of his authority. He became easy prey to the wary official; and marched off to the calaboose in grand style.''

Finally, the big day arrived and from his newspaper report on July 31, Martin appears to have been caught by the excitement and news potential of the fight. ''The prize fight advertised to come off today appears promising as we go to press. We saw the ropes, stakes, whiskey, and etceteras, loaded on a dray this morning. A train has been chartered, which will leave westward sometime about nine o'clock. The railroad men are backing Barney Bohan, and the Texans and vagabonds concentrated here by the show, seem to be backing Jim Cooper. It has been a mooted question all week whether the thing is to be a sell out or an honest fight, and the latest impression is the latter. Johnny Hickey of Kansas City, who whipped King, is among the notables in attendance. The town is full of buffers who can't live in Cheyenne or Hays City. Heaven spare us another such crowd.''

The blow by blow account of the big show was printed in the August 7th edition of the Union under the modest heading ''The Prize Fight.'' Though he didn't come right out and admit it, it was obvious that George Martin had condescended to cover the affair, for the report was clever and amusing and laced with a sermon or two. And if nothing else, the Martin's report alone made the big fight news-worthy.

''We have banged away and justly too, at the prize fight, until we, and perhaps many of our readers are tired of hearing about it; but gentle readers you have not had a scientific dose in print, relative to the ''bloody'' affair. You have not heard how two fine specimens of men, physically, as ever trod a ring faced each other round after round until the severity of the contest and the dogged disposition to hang on until the very last moment was such as to elicit the admiration of the assembled multitude, even though opposed — as many undoubtedly were — to the ''manly art.'' No you have not heard anything of the sort, and you never will, so far as the fight between Barney and Cooper is concerned. But this is what you may hear, being the observations of our own correspondent, actually on the spot.

''On last Saturday morning a train which had previously been chartered for the occasion, left this place facing westward immediately on the arrival of the eastern bound Express, loaded with the excursionists and the champions and their seconds, spongers, and bottle-holders. Of course there were no ''nice people'' on board that train — none but the very vilest of our citizens, but it seems strange upon such an occasion how many vile ones can be scared up.

''Up to the moment of starting, no one, not in the ring, could say definitely where the contest was to take place, it being desirable to get as many as possible on the train to defray expenses and have a little something left to treat the boys with after the amusements were over.

''Then it was indeed amusing to see so many of that class of our citizens who are ''above reproach,'' who did not care to see a prize fight — in fact were shocked at the idea that such a thing should be tolerated, make sly inquiries as to the precise locality — they did not wish to be understood as countenancing such a thing, but if they knew the exact locality they would take a carriage and drive out. Their relations, in a social and business point of view were such as to render it injurious to their hypocritical little souls to be seen in the crowd that showed their hands. The result was that the definite spot was not ascertained until the train arrived on the ground, and many of our ''men of character'' were deprived of the glorious privilege.

''But to the fight: The train moved on rapidly to a point two or three hundred yards beyond Chapman Creek Bridge. Here a piece of ground was selected and the stakes drove and rope stretched. The ring — 24 feet square — was soon completed, and 'tis said by those who were posted, that it was after the most approved pattern. A half dollar piece was then tossed for choice of corners — Patty somebody, Coopers second, winning the choice. Referees, Umpires, etc., were then chosen and in a moment more Barney made his appearance and threw his hat inside he ring, the crowd cheering. Cooper followed, repeating the same performance, and also receiving applause.

The seconds holding their several pets (females) on their knees announced ''ready,'' and all hands advanced to the center of the ring and shook hands. They then retired to corners and in a few moments both combatants were face to face. Now it would be a down right insult to report this 'fight' in detail. Suffice it to say, that Barney spied a fly on Cooper's left side and knocked it off with his left mauler, without however, injuring the fly, so delicate was his touch. It had the effect however, of bringing Cooper to grass.

''First knock down for Barney. Time again called, both to the scratch, Cooper looking fierce, Barney smiling. Cooper thought he saw a grasshopper on Barney's forehead, and made an attempt to bush it off, but Barney objected, and Cooper did not insist. This time Barney sat down to rest; Cooper to his corner in triumph. Betting weak. Some timidity exhibited by money holders.

''This performance was repeated for four more rounds, Barney still smiling and Cooper insisting on looking ugly, until the 7th round when that same grasshopper which had accompanied Barney in the struggle flew over to Cooper's corner and planted himself on Cooper's neck. Barney became enraged at this desertion of his companion to join the ranks of the enemy, so he forthwith set out to gobble him. After one or two attempts he finally made a rush for the ground and planting his paws upon Cooper's neck, grabbed the 'hopper' and Cooper fell to the ground exhausted.

''He was picked up by his seconds, carried to his corner and sponged and rubbed, but of no avail — he could not be restored in time to come to the scratch when time was called. The fight was then declared in favor of Barney, it having lasted just three and one-half minutes. The excursionists then returned home, having their fill of prize fighting.

''The fare to the excursion was $2.00. An extra dollar was charged to parties desiring to occupy a space inside the outside ring. Members of the press and all others supported by public charity, received complementaries and all the cigars they wanted.

''But seriously, the conception of the fight was disgraceful: the excursion to Chapman was disgraceful; the manner in which the affair was managed was disgraceful, and finally all connected with it disgraced themselves and acted low, cowardly, and child-like. It would be far better, as they announced the thing, to fight it out than to produce such an abortion.''

And thus see how area residents made ''The Dog Days of Summer'' interesting in times past.
