Letter: Hope that has worked

To the Editor

President Obama ran on a platform of hope and change. Just because you hear over and over ''his failed policies,'' doesn't make that statement true. You never hear specifics on what policies failed. He did save the auto industry; the taxpayer money loaned has been paid back, jobs saved and we still have an American auto industry. The stimulus did cost money and guess what — the unemployment rate began to decrease, and for over two years we've been adding more jobs than we're losing each month. Kansas took some of that stimulus money, we didn't say no.

The unemployment rate isn't where we need it to be, but we're at a much better place than we were. Don't forget where the country was three years ago.

By the end of George Bush's term he turned a surplus into twice that amount in deficit. Focusing solely on debt reduction is a formula for disaster. Gutting social programs, increasing the burden on the middle class and policies that limit opportunities for all Americans isn't the answer.

Austerity measures don't work. Decreasing the debt must not be at the expense of giving our children the opportunity to do better than we have. We must decrease the debt balanced by increasing revenue, and investing in our future. Whether it's a mortgage, car loan, or school loan, families' everyday leverage their debt to get ahead; the United States must to do the same. It's called a return on investment.

No, green energy is not just around the corner. Coal, solar, wind, oil, gas, and even nuclear energy and efficiency must be pursued as a comprehensive approach to wean our dependence on foreign oil.

There is no ''quick fix.'' If we don't start now, we'll be having this same argument 35 years from now, remember 1976?

Taking words like ''you didn't do that'' or ''you didn't build that,'' is akin to ''corporations are people,'' or ''I like being able to fire people,'' distorts larger thoughts by taking words out of context. Our future is not a sound bite.

President Obama's belief that government in concert with private business is the answer to our economic woes shows he appreciates and understands capitalism and free enterprise; he has a great chance of rebuilding our economy.

He began three years ago, it's clear the country needs a second term to continue the progress we've made.
