Cardboard boats to hit Milford Lake Saturday

Participants in Saturday’s Float Your Boat contest have nothing to fear, aside from the likelihood of getting soaked.

The contest, sponsored by the Geary County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, is part of Milford State Park’s Extreme Outdoor Water Festival, which starts at 10 a.m. Park admission is free for the day.

The festival and contest were cancelled last year because of blue-green algae in the lake. Event organizers are excited to bring back the contest this year.

“It’s great fun,” said Connie Hall of the Geary County Convention and Visitors Bureau. “It’s a great activity for kids and parents.”

Registration for the free contest is not required, but all boats and passengers must be at the Milford State Park South Boat Ramp between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

Contest entries will be judged on design, quality of construction, aesthetics, floating in water when empty, floating in water with one person in the boat, floating in water with the entire team in the boat and a timed race.

Winners will be picked from four divisions — family, teen, open and extreme. All boats must have two passengers, except extreme division entries, which can have four or six. Passengers must wear life jackets.

Hall said she has seen many boat designs both exceed and fail to meet her expectations in the race. She said she couldn’t offer any sure tips for success.

“I’ve seen ones I didn’t think would float and (they) finished the course,” Hall said. “Some people don’t even get out of the starting gate without tipping and sinking.”

Hall said the contest offers fun for everyone at the festival.

“If you’re racing or not, come out and watch,” she said.

Milford State Park Manager, Tony Reitz, said other free activities at the festival will include a jet ski simulator, information booths and displays. Food and drink vendors also will be at the park.

Reitz said the festival has been downsized due to low water levels and blue-green algae advisories earlier this summer.

“This is more of a rebuild year,” he said. “We’re going to come back next year and make it bigger and bigger.”

While Reitz said Float Your Boat is always “huge,” he stressed that water safety education is an important part of the festival.

“That’s our goal out here, to promote outdoors and water activity, but a part of that is being safe doing so,” he said.

Boat requirements

• Boats must be made only of cardboard and duct tape.

• Boats must have front, side and rear walls of at least 18 inches.

• Maximum boat length is 18 feet. There is no minimum.

• Only paddles or oars can be used to propel the boats.

• A boat can only race in one division, except the family division if different family members race.

• Extreme division boats must seat four or six passengers. All other divisions must seat two.

• At least one person in the boat must be over 18 years old.
