New future starts now

The newspaper industry has for years been in a change mode.

While that will most certainly continue, I don't think of change as bad. Instead, I see the future full of potential with exciting and unknown challenges ahead.

The Daily Union is embarking on a journey — one that focuses on providing information to people in and around Junction City while also giving our advertisers the best opportunities for success.

Right now, that is a combination of efforts with our print newspaper product and our website, which provides people different ways to access the information we create and provide.

Our change to fewer days of publishing is a path away from printed products — books and magazines are no different — that has started to take hold as digital product such as e-readers, tablets and smart phones have become more and more common.

While these changes lead us on a new path of how we present our information, what hasn't changed is that newspaper organizations remain the most trusted of all news sources and services.

That's what we do and who we are, whether that means our news coverage is published online, seven days a week in print or once a week in print.

Prior to being offered the job to come here, I was told there was a possibility of this newspaper going from publishing five days per week to three.

It wasn't a statement that surprised me or even made me think twice about accepting the position. When it was officially decided recently we would become a three-day publication, I felt exactly the same way I did several months ago — even more excited and challenged knowing we are blazing a new path in this information age.

This is our opportunity at The Daily Union to head in the direction we believe we need to, while at the same time still providing the solid, informative, entertaining and accurate news and information people are accustomed to relying upon.

Through this transition, we believe we are going to be able to produce a more creative and better organized publication with just the right editorial staffing level.

We also will focus on improving and adding content to our website and place more emphasis on our social media efforts to provide information to our readers and others.

In the end, The Daily Union is more than a newspaper. The commitment to be this community's main news source is bigger than the number of days we publish a print product.

We have headed down a road and we are not exactly sure what lies ahead or even exactly where we're going, but we know one thing, we always will keep in mind what's best for our readers and advertisers as these changes in media occur.

What we are is a communications company that provides your local news and information in several different ways — through our print product, on the Internet with our website, in special sections like the Flint Hills Guide and the Home Guide, using social media and who knows what else the future holds.

As a communication company, our goal is to continue to be the most trusted and thorough news source regardless of how the news is provided to our readers.

Our commitment remains the same and the decision that led to three publication days doesn't change that.
