How much art does $120,000 buy?

In the art world $120,000 can go a long way. Maybe not so much for those purchasing the high-dollar pieces, but for the artist and the art manager $120,000 translates into tremendous opportunities.

In some places such as some of our government departments, or business and industry $120,000 will barely cover one or two salaries.

For us at the Junction City Arts Council, $120,000 for one year covered two full-time employees and one part-time employee. It covered our rent in the gallery and the studio, all of our office needs, art equipment and supplies. It paid for artist fees when performers visited the schools, presented concerts in the park or at special events.

That $120,000 paid for hundreds of children to have exposure to live arts experiences, it allowed hundreds more to attend classes where they learned theater, improvisation, music, painting, drawing, glasswork, metal work and many other art genres. It gave a group of teenagers a place to go where they could explore their creativity in a safe and constructive manner and it guided young people who were looking for career paths in the creative industries. It gave local musicians a place to unwind and share their music, it allowed us to participate in numerous special events throughout Geary County and Fort Riley.

One of the more subtle, but tremendously important, thing that our $120,000 a year budget did for us was that it allowed JC Arts to provide a vital component to Junction City's quality of life. That component is what has brought people to Junction City and allowed residents to enjoy local activities without having to go out of town.

In July, we performed a murder mystery dinner for a private group that was holding its statewide annual meeting in Junction City. One of the planners spoke to me that evening about his disappointment in the availability of things to do in Junction City. He said the wives of the men who were meeting looked for a way to spend their day while their husbands were conducting their business. They went online but besides the activities that we offer in the way of our hands-on workshops, they couldn't find a way to spend their day — so they went to Manhattan, until the evening when we performed for their dinner entertainment.

I know the idea that there's nothing to do in Junction City strikes a negative chord for many of us. Especially for those of us who know that the Little Theater puts on terrific shows, the Opera House has a great line-up this year, in July we had several free concerts at Heritage Park, the Historical Society has a beautiful facility, but ...

When a convention or an annual meeting is coming into town they are not going to plan their activities around our special events. When someone is passing through, or here for the weekend, they are looking for a way to kill a little time, that usually does not include the theater unless they're visiting a place like Vegas or New York City where the theaters are part of the city's draw and have shows on a daily basis.

JC Arts, on the other hand, with our $120,000 a year budget has for several years been the place where people have been able to just stop in, on their schedule, and enjoy the arts both passively and actively.

How much can $120,000 buy in the art world? Not much if you're looking to buy a Monet, but it's a tremendous value if you want a quality arts program for the children, the adults, the local residents and the visitors.
