Emerald ash borer draws nearer to Kansas

The recent news that emerald ash borers (EAB) had been confirmed in Kansas City, Mo., just four miles from the Kansas state line sent chills down my spine. I've been in Michigan and seen how EAB has decimated, and is decimating, the native ash tree populations. I remember the Great Plains prior to Dutch Elm Disease. Block after block of streets in every town were lined with majestic old American elm trees. I remembered how these same streets looked after the elm trees had died. One by one the old majestic elms around here are slowly falling to this disease. EAB will do the same thing to ash trees if it gets here.

Let's review the EAB history and why it is so nasty. EAB is native to Asia. In 2002 it was discovered feeding in ash trees near Detroit. More than likely it had arrived 6 to 10 years prior to that.

It probably came into the country in wooden pallets that were in shipping containers. Once the EAB had arrived, it got established in the local ash trees and started increasing.

Like many borer insects, the adult lays eggs and the young larvae burrow into the ash tree under the bark and start feeding just under the bark, slowly cutting off the movement of water and nutrients between the roots and the leaves. Since it was an introduced pest, there are no native insects or diseases to slow it down or help control it. Once a tree is infested, it will usually die within 3 to 4 years.

There is one generation per year and newly emerged adults will often go back and lay eggs on or near the ash tree that they emerged from. There are some newer systemic insecticides that appear to provide protection to trees, but treatment needs to begin before the tree is infested and treatments need to be applied every year.

As the tree begins to suffer from EAB, you will see branch die back, which just gets worse and worse until the tree dies. Keep in mind that we have native ash tree borers, like the ash-lilac borer that can cause similar symptoms. It takes a trained eye to differentiate the emergence holes in the bark of ash trees from these two pests. The ash-lilac borer is a good sized insect and leaves a good sized round exit hole. The EAB is only a half inch long and narrow and leaves a much smaller letter D-shaped exit hole. One EAB will not reach all the way across a penny. In fact you could fit three or four EAB on a penny.

Here is what really scares me or makes me mad about EAB. They only travel a few miles a year on their own. They are not strong flyers. The ones found in Kansas City had probably been there for six years. It often takes that long to find them after they arrive. Those EAB did not arrive her on their own. They arrived in wood or firewood moved out of quarantined areas or they were in landscape trees that were brought illegally out of quarantined area. Either way, humans moved them into that area.

To slow their movement from Misouri into Kansas, we need to have everyone's cooperation. Don't move ash lumber or firewood out of infested areas. If you camp, buy firewood where you camp and leave it there. All it takes is one infested piece. Buy nursery stock from reputable local suppliers. Better yet, because of the risk of EAB getting into Kansas, just don't be planting any ash trees. Their chances for a long life just aren't really good at this time.
