Family: I am married to Jodi Wolf, who is a Kansas State Trooper in our area; we have two boys Cameron, 11, and Konner, 3.

Technology in policing appears to be a key topic for the sheriff’s department. What specifics are you talking about when looking toward the future of policing?

The future of police work is becoming dominated by computers. With that said, you can have all the computer equipment in the world, but without having trained staff to operate these, it is useless.

Therefore, technology and training will go hand in hand. I have proposed a joint cybercrimes unit with the both Junction City and Grandview Plaza Police Departments.

The unit will be made up of deputies and police officers who will be trained to use specialized software that can be used to combat cyber crimes. By pooling our resources with both police departments, the costs can be held down making a smaller impact on the budget. Additionally, our records department needs upgrades. We currently have an old microfilm machine and several rolls of film that contain cases. I would like to make those digital and easier to access. Our reporting process to the state needs to be upgraded so we can file our reports to the state online instead of by mail. I would also like to have the entire criminal justice system in Geary County on one computer system. That way, we can all have access to each other whenever the need arises.

It’s easy to say, “I want to move the department forward.” In your mind, what does that mean and how would you try to accomplish that?

Training is key to moving the department forward. I have set goals for the training process. We as law enforcement officers are required by state statute to maintain 40 hours a year of in-service training. I propose an extra 20 to be gained in-house. This is where we will learn the legislative updates that affect us and case law.

Case law affects us as much as any statute changes. I want the deputies to be well informed with these changes. That way, when confronted with a situation in the community, they will be able to make better decisions. A well trained deputy/jailer is the foundation of this department. As I said before, keeping up with technology is another key to moving the department into the future, and by pooling resources, we keep costs down and gain very valuable tools. It is important to maintain and improve our relationships with the surrounding jurisdictions.

Contacts that I have made with them over the years will help that process. I, along with my wife, have dedicated our lives to law enforcement and public service.

What do you see as the functions of the sheriff and how do your personal qualities and characteristics fit in with that definition?

The functions of the sheriff are laid out in Kansas statute. Such functions include maintaining a jail and service of civil process. Those are duties that I have a lot of experience in. However, the office of the sheriff is not limited to just those duties. Keeping the public safe is one of the biggest tasks.

One of the best ways to do that is to keep the public informed of what is going on. The line of communication always needs to stay open. That is one of our biggest tools for fighting crime.

I have the ability to communicate well with people and see that as a great attribute for serving you as the sheriff. I never want anyone to think that they cannot talk to me when something is troubling them. I also have the knowledge and experience to run the department. This is something that I have gained over the years watching the people before me do the job and seeing what worked for them and what didn’t.

How do you view crime in Geary County? Is it high or low, and what do you do about it?

Geary County is a very unique community; however, we are not immune to criminal activity. I have checked the statistics from the KBI and from 2008 to present, our community has become better each year. The number of index crimes in Geary County has gone down with the exception of last year when there was a small increase. Can I attribute this to any one thing? No, I cannot. However, I can say that the numbers are still lower than 2008 and 2009.

I will say that education, community involvement and after-school activities are just a few resources that have had an impact on crime here in Geary County. Tougher penalties for crimes committed would be an avenue to explore. I would invite the opportunity to work with state lawmakers in helping change some current laws, and work together to clear up some statutes that we as law enforcement officers encounter every day. We have a computer program that can show us where in the city or county where crime are being reported. With that information, we can then formulate where we focus our resources for crime prevention. Aggressive pursuit of criminal activity is what I have done with my career thus far, and will continue if I am elected as sheriff.

Why should voters choose you over your opponent when they head to the polls?

I was born and raised here on our farm in southern Geary County. I made life-long connections with many in the community. I have a very good understanding of the people the community and their needs. With regard to the operation of the sheriff’s department, I have the knowledge and experience to run the department. I began my career as a jailer and have worked my way up through the ranks. I am currently the undersheriff and I also execute the duties of the sheriff in his absence. None of the other candidates have these qualifications and experience. I have been involved in the budget process from start to finish.

For the last 12 years, Sheriff Jensen has consistently operated under budget. As a result, this has kept our taxes from increasing. This is the type of budget experience I have gained, and I plan to utilize that experience in the future. I have a common-sense approach to law enforcement, and an excellent working relationship with all agencies, to include the Geary County Attorney’s office. As sheriff of Geary County, I will dedicate my life to the position of sheriff and pledge to protect this community and your families.
