July 2nd hottest month on record in Junction City

Yes, July was hot. While it was a hotter month than most area residents have probably ever seen, it wasn’t the hottest July or month ever for the area. Yes, it was also dry. But it wasn’t the driest July on record either. But when the ongoing heat and dry weather are coupled together, we find ourselves deep in a drought that is as bad or worse than this area has seen in the past 50 years.

The average daily high for July was 99.6 degrees, 9.5 degrees above normal. The average overnight low was 72.5, 5 degrees above normal. This resulted in a monthly mean temperature of 86.1, 7.3 degrees above normal. This makes July 2012 the second hottest July — and the second hottest month ever — for the Junction City area. The hottest month was July 1954 with a monthly mean temperature of 87 degrees. This is the second year in a row with an unusually hot July. July of 2011 was the fifth hottest July on record. The coldest July on record was 1950 with a mean temperature of 73.8. But just three years ago, 2009, the July mean temperature was a very comfortable 74.2 degrees.

For the Junction City area, we only have weather data for temperatures back to 1947 and rainfall data to 1931. So our temperature records don’t take into account the 1930s. We can look at Manhattan with records back to 1890 and make some comparisons. Looking at Manhattan’s records, we can see that 2012 makes it up to sixth on their hottest July chart. The years that were hotter than 2012, and the monthly mean temperature are: 1934, 90.13; 1936, 88.00; 1980, 87.77; 1935, 86.65; and 1901, 86.55.

Surprisingly there were not very many daily temperature records set during July.

The high of 106 on the 28th tied that record high first set in 1956. The overnight low of 77 on the fifth tied that record high low temperature. That record was originally set in 1963. The overnight lows of 81 on the 17th and 82 on the 24th were both new record high low temperatures. The previous records, respectively, were 77 reached in 1957 and 1996 and also 77 reached in 1997.

The Junction City area reached daily highs of 100 or above on 19 days in July. The highest temperature for July was 106 degrees reached on the 18th, 25th, 28th and 29th. The lowest temperature for the month was the low of 65 on the 10th. The last day that the area saw a daily high below 90 was on July 9, with an afternoon high of 84. July 8 and 9 were the only days in July that had daily highs below 90. Since 1947, the average number of days

in July with daily highs of 100 or above is four. July 2012 ties 1954 with 19 days of 100 or above. By comparison, 1934 in Manhattan had 27 days of temperatures 100 or above.

As often happens, high temperatures seem to be accompanied with drier than normal precipitation patterns. Normal rainfall for July is 4.07 inches. Milford Lake received 0.67 inches of rain during July, Junction City received 0.58 inches. Average precipitation for our area for January through July is 20.72 inches. So far this year, Milford Lake has received 11.74 inches and Junction City 11.95 inches. The driest July on record was in 1983 when 0.04 inches was all that was recorded. The wettest July was in 1950, not 1951 or 1993, when 13.65 inches of rain fell. For year-to-date totals, 2012 now ranks as the sixth driest year on record. 1966 was the driest with 6.67 inches for January through July.

Typically, August is cooler and drier than July. I think everyone would take the cooler, but drier doesn’t sound very good at this time. Average August rainfall is 3.96 inches. Average daily highs for August start the month at 91 and end the month at 88. Average overnight lows range from 67 on the 1st to 64 on the 31st.
