Otte: Drought is hard on all plants

A drought is defined as an extended period of precipitation that is below the long term average for a specific area. Droughts can be short term or long term. Even in years with below average annual rainfall, plants and crops can do OK — IF there is rainfall at critical times. Droughts are seldom accompanied by cooler than normal temperatures. They are usually in conjunction with hot weather, which then makes the damage to plants even worse.

Through the end of June, our area was at 67 percent of long-term average precipitation. We were fortunate that the past four years have been average or above average precipitation years. But now we have pretty much depleted our soil moisture reserves. More than half the state of Kansas is in extreme to exceptional drought conditions. The entire state is experiencing some level of drought conditions as is roughly two thirds of the continental U.S. It is dry!

Droughts of this magnitude do not go away with just one rainfall. Given the present soil moisture conditions, we would essentially need over an inch of rain a week for the next three months to meet crop growth needs and to recharge soil moisture supplies. I don't think that this kind of turn around is in the long-range forecast.

Some plants can survive droughts, even long droughts fairly well. Other plants are very drought sensitive. Even just a short term drought can cause serious stress or death to these species. But even the most drought tolerant plants we have will be stressed by the kind of conditions we are experiencing right now. Sadly, many homeowners have the wrong ideas of how much drought trees and shrubs can tolerate.

To start with, toss out the notion that trees and shrubs are deep rooted. More than 80 percent of the active roots of trees and shrubs are in the top foot of soil. By active I mean those roots that are taking up the majority of water and nutrients. Very few trees have roots that extend more than a few feet below the surface. Those species that do have roots that go deeper are generally using these roots as anchors. These roots do not have the extensive fibrous root hairs that are used for extracting moisture and nutrients out of the soil. To put it in other terms, it's amazing that these trees aren't showing more heat and moisture stress than they are.

In my opinion, you can forget the lawns. We can get a new lawn up and going in just a couple of years. A tree can take a lifetime to grow. Spend you watering dollars on keeping trees and shrubs alive in weather like this. To do a tree or shrub the most good, you really need to soak up the top foot of soil under the drip line of the tree. The best way to do this is with a slow running open hose or one of the black weeping soaker hoses. If you have a tree that has branches extending out fifteen feet from the trunk, this amounts to a little over 700 square feet of area within that drip line. It will take roughly two inches of water to soak up that foot of soil. This amounts to about 900 gallons of water. Figure on the hose running at about one gallon per minute, that amounts to 15 hours of slow soaking. Do this every three to four weeks until cooler weather or rainy weather returns.

I would focus on spruce, pine and junipers first and bearing fruit trees second. Then move to broad leaved evergreens like holly and boxwood and them move on to your other trees and shrubs. We don't know how long this drought will last, but I intend to still have my trees alive and well after it finally breaks!
