Letter: Communication key

To the Editor:

Much has been discussed since the June 20, meeting of the Convention and Visitors Bureau about the 2013 budget.

One would logically think that the new CEO and head of the new Junction City Chamber of Commerce, which encompasses the Junction City-Geary County CVB, the chamber, the Economic Development Commission and the Military Affairs Council, would want to understand what each of the entities does and how they do it. One would think that communication would be the best avenue to accomplish this great task — certainly not listening to the naysayers. One would hope both sides of this story could be told and relied on, not hearsay. The statement in our meeting by Mr. Weigand that ''I have been told'' and ''that's what I heard'' does not hold water. How about the facts.

Actually, it would have been nice and certainly saved a lot of bad publicity had Mr. Weigand sat down with the full committee and staff in a pre-planning session before the June 20 meeting and thoroghly discussed each line item to understand the budget and fully understand what each program entails. It would have been nice if he would have made the May meeting to discuss goals, objectives and ideas before he appeared at the June meeting with his hatchet. As he said, he just arbitrarily cut our budget.

After a subsequent meeting, the budget compromises were made with good discussion and much thought and we only hope to move forward promoting our great community, bringing in new dollars so we can all be successful.

Each show the CVB attends has a different goal, but always to promote Junction City and Geary County.

The Convention and Visitor's Bureau Committee was told by the commissioner who sits on our board, and who was instrumental in moving this organization along, that we would be able to carry on and continue to do what we have been doing. Yes, we knew that there would be adjustments and compromises that each party would and must do to make this work, but that takes communication and cooperation from everyone.

I find it simply wrong to try to tear down the only organization in this town that operates in the black and cut back on programs that have worked and are working well to fill the lodging industry in this town, so there is a transient bed tax to work with.
