Otte: You've got to listen to your body

As many of you are aware, I got to spend a day and a half in the cardiac care center of a hospital a few weeks ago. The good news is that this was by choice, not because I was having a heart attack and had to. It's caused me to reflect on a lot of things and sort of turned me into a missionary preaching the message that you've got to take care of yourself and you have to learn to listen to your body!

Since absolutely everybody wants to know why I went in and what my symptoms were, let me just lay out the whole story so that maybe some folks will learn from what almost happened to me. I've noticed, from the questions that I've been asked, that many folks have concerns, but they don't seem to want to visit their doctor. Folks, quit trying to diagnose yourselves and for heaven's sake quit trying to do it via the Internet!

A few months ago, about the time we all started getting busy outside in the spring, I started having symptoms when I'd start doing very much physical activity. It would start with heartburn like sensation up the middle of my chest that would progress into the left side of my neck and clear up into the jaw. I'd get dull arthritis like aches in my shoulders. Sometimes I'd feel like I had a cramp on my left side below my armpit. They were always worse right after eating and they'd always go away if I sat down for a couple of minutes.

While most of these symptoms seem like classic cardiac concern issues, I've since found out that they can be caused by several things. My doctor switched a medicine to see if that helped and when it didn't we set up a series of tests so we could rule out all the possibilities and pinpoint the culprit. The telling tale was when a treadmill stress test showed reduced blood flow to the front of my heart. A visit with a cardiologist and 36 hours later I checked into the hospital where a catheteriztion found the problem, an artery was opened and a stent put in place.

At this point I can not say enough good things about the doctors and staff at Geary Community Hospital who located the problem and the wonderful doctors and staff at the Cardiac Care Unit of St. Francis Hospital in Topeka. They were all wonderful and saved me from a probable heart attack.

So here's my take home messages. I was lucky! Some people never have warning signs and just have a heart attack. You need to start with knowing what's normal for you. What started happening this spring was not normal for me and I didn't like it. So I started talking to my doctor and we started doing some tests to find out.

Many people responded with comments like, ''You're too young for this'' or, ''you aren't overweight — you don't smoke — you're active — you obviously eat a good diet'', etc. Those are statements of denial. Those are things people say that might just as well say, ''If it could happen to you, it could happen to me!'' Which is exactly right. To put it bluntly, I have bad heart genetics and I knew it.

You need to know what your family medical background is. Know your weak links and then pay attention to those little clues your body is telling you. Don't wait for them to smack you in the face with a sledgehammer. See your doctor regularly, eat better diets, exercise more, lose weight (all things that I'm now doing). And most importantly, take some of those tests. Swallow your pride, set aside your modesty, put on that drafty hospital gown and find out what's going on. For your sake, and your family's sake.
